Katrina's actions
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 60 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided below and spend 60 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 5 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Create Your Own Action
Forage for My Food
I will use the resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Katrina Anderson 5/01/2020 9:24 PMA large amount of electricity in Madison is generated from coal. Luckily our energy company is moving more and more towards solar/wind energy. But even a little bit of coal ruins ecosystems both in the extraction as well as the greenhouse gases it emits! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Katrina Anderson 4/27/2020 9:56 PMeating more meat is not only detrimental to the environment with all of the greenhouse gas that is emitted, it is also taking up valuable cropland. A very high percentage of corn and soy that is produced worldwide is fed to animals. In addition to this, the overconsumption of meat is causing a multitude of health problems. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCreate Your Own Action Forage for My FoodPeople are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations are just a few examples. What is your chief motivation for foraging?
Katrina Anderson 4/27/2020 2:51 PMI think foraging is a really unique way to try to connect to the land you're around and on. I have really enjoyed trying to ID plants and observe them closely on walks in the woods and in parks. It brings a sense of wonder! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Katrina Anderson 4/24/2020 8:44 PMIt absolutely rings true. I am at my happiest when I am outside and on an adventure in the woods. It is where I am able to see creation and appreciate it fully. When I was little, I would spend hours outside with my brothers and neighbors using our imaginations as well as exploring crevices for bugs or toads or other things. If you spend a lot of time indoors, it is impossible to be connected to the outside world. If you are not connected to the outside world, there is no possible way you can truly care about it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Katrina Anderson 4/24/2020 8:41 PMIt would look like not watering lawns excessively, with automatic sprinklers every morning. It would also look like using fewer fertilizers in our area so our ponds can stay clean. Basically it would involve people understanding how precious water resources are. Once your perspective changes, it is a lot easier to make changes that will last. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Katrina Anderson 4/22/2020 8:33 PMI often buy things in single-use containers such as peanut butter. As I've explored zero waste retailers, I've realized how fun and easy it is to bring mason jars with me and fill them up with everything from yummy peanut butter to fair trade chocolate chips! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Katrina Anderson 4/20/2020 8:51 PMWhen I am paying attention to what I am eating, I certainly enjoy my food more. I am also mindful of how much I am eating. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Katrina Anderson 4/20/2020 8:49 PMI would like to spend more time reflecting on things I am thankful for! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Katrina Anderson 4/20/2020 8:48 PMI feel better when I eat more vegetables. Snacking on veggies instead of whatever else is a great way to eat healthier in general. Less meat means less CO2 and water loss from meat production. It also means I am not supporting an industry that hires a lot of immigrants and marginalized individuals to work in less than stellar conditions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Katrina Anderson 4/20/2020 8:45 PMI know that even if a charger plugged in isn't charging anything, it still is using energy. So I can make a practice of unplugging chargers and other things I use intermittently.
