  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Choose Organic Ingredients
Many people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?

Taking this challenge was actually alot  easier than expected. I didn’t think that I was going to be able to even make one meal a day with just using organic foods but I managed to find lots of recipes and try lots of new foods. This being said I think that we are more than able to feed the whole earth with just using organic food and it would be very beneficial to the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

The energy is created using various techniques including the break down of garbage at excel energy, methanol that is released at landfills and the burning of coal or fossil fuels. These all creat some type of waste that then effects the air and animals.

What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

There are many things that can be done to reduce energy use and save environmental footprint. I can put plastic over my windows in the winter to reduce the amount of heat that can escape through the window seals, I can turn off my lights when I am not using them, can take shorter showers, turn off the water when I am brushing my teeth and unplug electronics that aren’t being used.

    Community Volunteer in my Community
What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?

I signed up to volunteer with LaCrosse Parks and Rec and Special Olympics. With these programs I will have a lot of opportunities to make a difference in the community and volunteer. With this I can also promote sustainable living and eco friendly habits
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

I looked up the average energy usage in lacrosse and took a look at the receipts from excel energy. The amount of energy that my house uses per month was a little lower than the average but I know there are a lot of other things that I could do to make it even lower. One thing that I could do is take shorter showers, remember to turn off all of the lights when I leave a room or leave the house, turn off the heat/air conditioning and open the windows, and unplug unnecessary appliances when they aren't being used.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

Changing all of my bills and mail to nonpaper makes me feel like I am making some environmental changes. Changing to this method is a lot easier than I thought and a lot of people and companies support this movement. My landlord had no problem with us paying through venmo, and the excel energy and wifi companies actually have a system where you can pay online. The next step to reduce my waste is to have all my teachers let us turn in our assignments online instead of wasting paper by having to print them out.

How do you practice self care?

Today I made my annual checkup with my doctor and will be having a physical in march during spring break. I also heard about how there is a new type of flu shot that just got released in the beginning of October so I plan on getting that shot soon. I try to practice self care everyday but having a routine and being honest with myself. I also try to give myself rewards like a half an hour of watching tv if i do two hours of homework or finish all my assignments. This way I can prioritize how I am going to spend my day and relieve stress by getting homework done and then having alone time relaxing afterwards!
