Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 8 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit

Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

kayla arellano 11/24/2020 12:05 AMI learn ways on how to be eco-friendly everyday. -
kayla arellano 11/23/2020 11:52 PMCould be going better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
kayla arellano 11/23/2020 11:51 PMLiving in the dorms, the tap water is not the most tasty and I am super picky about my water so I have been buying water from the dining hall. We are also not allowed to fill up our bottles in the dining hall. However, I recently bought a brita and will try to drink out of that from now on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
kayla arellano 11/23/2020 11:42 PMFor refuse, I could start buying things with the least amount of plastic, Maybe shop at zero waste stores. Choosing biodegradable options rather than synthetic/plastic. For reduce, I will be reducing my fish consumption. For the other R's I have already been doing as much as I can living in the dorms. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
kayla arellano 11/23/2020 11:31 PMI have actually found myself needing a bag for items when I forget my reusable bag. Usually when I do not have a lot of items I will carry them out. I have bought a disposable bag few times and I have used them for bags as trash and will throw them up when it completely tears up. I did make a change and I now have a reusable bag in my backpack, and all my purses that I use so that if I do end up needing one I have one. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
kayla arellano 11/23/2020 11:26 PMI notice that I am tossing out less than what I use to. Though it is hard to compost, when I go to my aunts every weekend I compost everything that I can and I have helped my aunt replant her fruits and veggies with the compost by potting and sprinkling it on top. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
kayla arellano 11/23/2020 11:23 PMI think that most people are selfish and it is human nature to not think about how our purchases will impact other people, animals, and let alone other places. This challenge will without a doubt have an impact on my future consumption. I have already educated my parents what I have learned and I know that because I am trying to be as eco-friendly as I am I will be even more> -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
kayla arellano 11/23/2020 11:17 PMBy practicing gratitude it keeps you uplifted and overall happy. Not to mention it motivates you to not only have a better life, but a better world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
kayla arellano 11/23/2020 11:13 PMI think that Pollan is trying to say that its easier to eat and pay for healthier foods than seeing the doctors.
