Sophia's actions
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 20 minute(s) each day.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 20 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 10 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Transportation
Support Public Transportation
Access to public transportation enables more opportunity and a better quality of life. I will make 2 phone call(s) and/or send 2 emails per day to public officials to advocate for a more comprehensive public transportation system in my region.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Sophia Brown 4/23/2020 5:34 AMI need to wash my items out so there is no food contamination. This is a big one that I don't do and I will start remembering to do this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Sophia Brown 4/23/2020 5:33 AMRunning in nature is definitely what I plan on continuing to do. Also doing it with friends who support me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureKathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How can we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?
Sophia Brown 4/22/2020 1:47 PMI would agree that having gratitude makes you accountable. I think we do this by normalizing saying what we are grateful for and encourage yourself and those around you to also state what we are grateful for. This can really open the door for other folks to value those things which you value. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Sophia Brown 4/21/2020 5:18 AMEspecially in the time of COVID-19, I am aware of people more, especially when walking. People with masks, people with out. People who are laughing, those holding hands. I think I appreciate seeing everyone more and I like seeing folks happy more. If I was driving though, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the weather (which haha I almost got rained on!) or the fun of the wind. If I was driving I wouldn't appreciate the people as much. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Sophia Brown 4/21/2020 5:11 AMBuying soap that comes in minimal packaging. Also learning about water insecure regions of the world where a 5 minute shower is normal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Sophia Brown 4/20/2020 6:57 AMI toss a lot of food scraps but there is also a clementine that has gone bad because I didn't eat it fast enough. I will try to be more mindful of eating food when it's ripe and prioritizing that over food that will last longer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Sophia Brown 4/20/2020 6:55 AMI would like to have my practice be dedicated to my community which includes the Earth and her inhabitants.
