I actually stepped outside of my comfort and decided to explore different topics. I love how there are research activities then a reflection question to follow it. I believe this helps building knowledge and understand your own community better.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Vandelyn Brown (Salem)'s avatar
Vandelyn Brown (Salem) 3/20/2022 6:13 PM
Many of waste sites are located surrounding our city. So the city are most affected by these locations. There are times I go to my door to get fresh air just to smell horrible things in the air. Since I moved here I would always say, the air is polluted because it smells horrible. Then I realized how close all of the waste locations are.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Vandelyn Brown (Salem)'s avatar
Vandelyn Brown (Salem) 3/20/2022 5:59 PM
Something new to me, plastic bags and wraps should not be in recycle because it gets stuck in machine and they have to reset them. Also if other things need to be recycle that can not go on the curve, we have a dump site in our city open to the public. They weigh your vehicle when you go in as well as when you come out so they know what to charge you. Inside the facility there are many different areas such trash, regular recycle, electronics, wood, computers, appliances, etc. It is just amazing just being able to see the process in how to help our environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

Right now I would have to say the gas and food prices. No way should we be paying $20 or more in some cases for 10 party wings, just an example. I keep wondering if prices for food keeps rising, will people go hungry because they can not afford it! Another thing is the labor. Companies are hiring new employees at these high pay rates, yet not even considering change their current employees to match it. I try to encourage employees to fight it because they deserve it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Audit Toxic Cleaning Products
To what extent do environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?

    Vandelyn Brown (Salem)'s avatar
Vandelyn Brown (Salem) 3/20/2022 5:45 PM
I never knew windex is toxic, at least I never researched it. It can be irritant to skin, eyes, throat and lungs, damaging the mucus membrane and airways. This is a major factor that will contribute to me finding a better product to replace this with. I always said windex was a little strong for me, yet not strong enough for me to research because I would have never thought there were toxins in it. We only get one body and we have to be aware not only of things we intake physically, yet also the stuff we cannot see.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
How do you think climate change will affect your region’s water supply? Think about the effects of weather, storms, salinity, and sea level rise, among other changes. How can you find out more about climate change’s impact to your region's water?

    Vandelyn Brown (Salem)'s avatar
Vandelyn Brown (Salem) 3/20/2022 5:32 PM
Climate change can affect the air quality as well a damage property. It can also cause flooding. Another research states it can increase the chances of getting lime disease. You can find out more information by visiting your city or state water website as well as google.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Support Pollution Reduction
What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

    Vandelyn Brown (Salem)'s avatar
Vandelyn Brown (Salem) 3/19/2022 7:19 PM
Air pollution which increases the risk of premature death, asthma attacks, cancer and other adverse health effects, according to PennEnvironment. York air pollution is one of the highest listed as not good. Statics show the city went 67 days straight with messed up air pollution. State Rep. Evans stated that York has too many air pollution days and it is unacceptable. Anything we breathe in affects our health. So just think if we are breathing in toxic air, smh. Pay attention to your health as well as your environment, they each play a role in healthier living.

It will affect a community if people are trying to eat healthier. A main affect will be health concerns such as diabetes, stroke and many other chronic illness due to lack of nutritious food available to the community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Where are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?

    Vandelyn Brown (Salem)'s avatar
Vandelyn Brown (Salem) 3/18/2022 6:00 PM
The Susquehanna River and it is affected by runoff with the pollution such as when it moves it takes the sewage as well as other street pollution with it. Just to wonder where it ends up and if get cleaned out thoroughly.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?

I always listen for sounds within pipes and walls. I notice some people will say, "Oh my toilet always run". My thought are, "umm, no that is not normal and I am scared to see your bill, lol". So I have always be mindful in this area. One thing I don't do is blow my nose with tissue and flush it down the toilet; it goes in the trash. My mindset is why waste a flush on a piece of toilet paper when the trash already has particles in it.
