Samantha's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Action Track: Building Resilience
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 5 minutes using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Food
Advocate for More Food Options
I will advocate for local and/or organic food options at work or on campus.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Help Others
I will offer to help 1 person(s) who are in need each day.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 1 new neighbor(s) each day.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Samantha Carsello 4/15/2021 7:50 AMBy limiting myself to only using recyclable materials, and repurposing objects for different things. Implementing things like this into my lifestyle will help limit my waste over time, and educate me on ways to incorporate the other R's into my life as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Samantha Carsello 4/15/2021 7:46 AMI would love to preserve fruits such as raspberries and cherries to eat later in the year, when they are no longer in season. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Samantha Carsello 4/15/2021 7:43 AMThe most practical way to plant an herb garden in my current living situation is by planting in pots that can sit on my window sill. At home, I planted herbs like basil and dill so I am able to use them in my food! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Samantha Carsello 4/14/2021 12:21 PMUsing things such as plastic bags, tinfoil, and styrofoam are single-use items that I use on a regular basis. Switching to glass Tupperware for food storage, and investing in reusable straws and water bottles is something I have been using instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Samantha Carsello 4/11/2021 8:33 PMNot making unnecessary waste on papers that I will throw away or just having easier access to things makes me feel happy and more organized. Having all of my necessities available in the same place as well as feeling less cluttered is a way to promote my reduction of waste. Something else that I can do to prevent my waste is cutting back on types of packaging that cannot be recycled or biodegradable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Samantha Carsello 4/11/2021 8:30 PMDouble-sided printing is a good way to save printer paper, as well as save money on paper and staples. The less paper being used to make handouts and print papers should be encouraged and automatically changed as default on all printers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate for More Food OptionsWhat changes would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods? How can your choices contribute to these changes?
Samantha Carsello 4/11/2021 8:23 PMStarting programs like community or school gardens is a good way to ensure that people are able to have access to locally grown foods. This is a good way to help increase knowledge on how to grow foods at home that can be used in all kinds of dishes to have a healthy diet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Samantha Carsello 4/11/2021 8:20 PMIt is important to take care of pollinators to ensure that we are able to grow foods as well as other aspects of nature. If pollinators were not taken care of, all plants would have a hard time being fertilized.-
Sara Cornelius 4/13/2021 6:26 AMYES!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Help OthersIn your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?
Samantha Carsello 3/30/2021 4:54 AMInstead of feeling bonded together, it drives a divide through the community. Social inequalities are something that is an issue in today's day and age and it is a constant issue that we need to try to fix.
