To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?

This challenge was hard to do because everything is packaged in plastic. I have been doing so to purposely get products that are bundled by a rubber band and keep that rubber band. As for using an entire vegetable, I am still learning. I follow a lot of people who do zero-waste cooking on social media. I am excited to expand my knowledge!

When I was still living in the Philippines, my brother, friends, and I were swimming in the ocean. We ended up swimming under a small coral reef. It was soooooo beautiful!! All of us were awed by it. It made us really happy. We keep telling each other the next time we come back, and we have to bring goggles so we could go and explore under. I miss the Philippines so bad!

I want to share some actions that you can do that I have done and that I am currently doing throughout my life to consume less water.
    1. Take shorter showers. I know that 5 minutes may seem scary and impossible. Another way that you can do it is to measure the amount of water you use. In the OAKS meeting, I have shared that I wash with 7 pitchers of water. I’ve done this my whole life since I was still living in the Philippines. I shifted back at the beginning of the year! It has been great, and it feels good to know how much water I use.
    2. Taking cold showers or reducing the level of hot water because to get hot water uses more water to heat up!
    3. Use bidets and cloth toilet towels. My family and I have been using bidets and cloth toilet towels for over 3 years now. Bidets wipe your behind better than toilet paper. Bidets are also more sustainable because it requires an extensive amount of water to make toilet paper.
    4. Replacing paper towels, kleenexes, and toilet paper to cloth towels. You get to reuse them by washing them! It also saves you money! Again, it requires a lot of water to make these products, from growing a tree to manufacturing.
    5. Use reusable period products. I have done a few discussions about reusable period products and how they are more sustainable. I have been using RPP for 5 years now, and I have not purchased any disposable period products. It is an investment, but it is worth it!
    I hope these help!

I wanted to share a poster that I made from my senior year of high school. I am unsure if you can see the sign, but I have listed some Bottled Water and Tap Water pros and cons. I also listed some actions we can take to provide clean, free water to the community.
