Watch the film Creatures of Convenience on CBC Gem

Check out the film Creatures of Convenience on CBC Gem for FREE! This is a local film about the the impact our culture of convenience has on the environment. If you liked the film, consider attending our Earth Day event on Thursday, April 22: "In Conversation: Creatures of Convenience," a Q&A session with the film's producer and filmmaker, moderated by KPU instructor Dr. Paul Richard! To complete this action, you only have to watch the film - but we'd love to see you at the event as well! :)

I was going through the mindfulness category and one action they have is being mindful/mediative everyday.  I find it helpful to be mediative before bed. I close my eyes and go through several stretches and think about my goals and how I can be better

Awesome! It helps reducing anxiety right? before going to sleep, I've been trying to do what they call "the ocean breath". Have you heard of it? It's very useful too!

Did you know that you can request new books to be ordered from the library so twice a month you can request books to be purchased and in turn this encourages a sharing economy and expands your communities knowledge 😊
Also who can say no to free books!

      Wow, that's great! I didn't know that!!
I like to read the printed books, but then I think that I'm only gonna read it once, so I give up and buy an ebook. But with this option to request public libraries to buy new books, it's great! thanks for sharing!

I did not know that! Do all libraries do that here in BC or is it our KPU library specifically? You learn something new everyday!

Something new I learned this year was making jam. We have a patch of raspberries in our backyard and I collected them and turned them into jam it was actually pretty easy. You take the raspberry and filter out the seeds, the mix the purée with sugar and some jello mix to get that consistency. After hearing it to a boil you put them into jars that have been sanitized and store them away. Even thou it was my first time doing it I had a great time and the jam was a hit for Christmas presents

I knew in the lower mainland we weren’t that great at recycling but it’s  surprising how bad we truly are. I feel like as a society we need to make this a priority in order to engender change.

Definitely! I think we are moving in the right direction with more people focusing on zero waste and questioning the efficacy of recycling!

If anyone’s interested in a local community supporting agriculture (CSA) then Clayton market has some really good suggestions.

One of the suggestions is meal prep and planning a week of meals. Because of Covid I’ve been doing more meal prep and only doing one major shop every couple weeks. We had a roast in the freezer and so we did a big batch to prep for the next 2 weeks

I wanted to get a better understanding about farming practices so I watch a The biggest little farm on Netflix and it was a really fun watch. I liked how they connected all the decisions they made to impacts on the environment

Check out the biosphere 2 a project in the 90s studying a self contained environment.

That's super interesting. I'd heard of Biosphere 2 but hadn't looked into it very thoroughly. Something to keep in mind for all of those technocrats who think we'll just be able to move to Mars no problem!

This quote in particular is chilling: "The scientists Joel Cohen and David Tilman wrote, “No one yet knows how to engineer systems that provide humans with the life-supporting services that natural ecosystems produce for free.”"
