Why is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?

Voting is important in creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world because you are deciding the best people in your opinion that would be fit to run this country. Everyone's vote matters because it is all added up in the end. Other ways I can actively participate in important decision making is by doing my research to help me understand a topic or issue or situation better.

    Waste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Caroline Copp (Cho)'s avatar

Landfills and waste sites are mostly located in cities, or towns surrounding a city. For example, there are landfills in White Marsh MD which is close to Baltimore, and there is a landfill/waste site in Conestoga PA and York PA. This makes cities and towns that surround those cities the most affected by these landfills and waste sites.

    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

Because it is a little too cold outside for plants to grow, and that my mom is allergic to bees, I have decided to plant an herb garden in a few small planting pots and sat them near a window in order for those plants to get sunlight. This also works for my lifestyle because my family has 2 dogs that love to get into trouble so keeping the herb garden on a high self in the house works perfectly.

Action Track: Building Resilience Collect Rain Water
Trace the water that flows down the drain from your house to the largest body of water nearby. What is the route it takes?

The water that flows from my house flows to the creek that is just a house away from my house. The water travels from our house out towards the road and then travels down the road into a drain that drains into a creek, our house is positioned on a slight hill.

Action Track: Building Resilience Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Caroline Copp (Cho)'s avatar

Without pollinators, many of our ecosystems, or all of our ecosystems, would die and struggle for survival. Pollination occurs for most of the food that we consume on a daily basis too, so without pollinators we would not have a lot of the food that we currently have today.

Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

Caroline Copp (Cho) 3/19/2022 8:17 AM
I did not do any pickling because I do not feel like I would do it right, but this challenge did say I could make homemade bread. I decided to make some bread and it turned out alright. The bread is very dense probably because it was not mixed enough, but I did not have a stand mixer so I had to mix the dough by hand. The bread tastes very good but it is just dense.

    Energy Switch to Cold Water
What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

Caroline Copp (Cho) 3/19/2022 6:10 AM
I do not pay the water bill in my family, my parents do. But i am pretty sure this saved money would go towards paying other bills like the heating bill, electric bill, or even fixing stuff around the house.

I feel like my ecochallenge is going pretty good. However, i did not realize how busy I am throughout the day until I started doing this challenge. I have just had so much on my plate that it has been hard to remember to check in to my ecochallenge some days.
