Kailey's actions
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 40-minute walk outside each day.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 4 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Simplicity
Go For A Daily Walk Outside
I will take a walk outside for 40 minutes each day.
Water
Use Reusable Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 20 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided below and spend 40 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Community
Join my Student Government or Local Group
I will join my neighborhood association, student government, or another local group of decision makers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Use Reusable BottlesWhat are some of the needs that water meets or benefits that water provides for you?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Kailey Corder 4/21/2020 2:53 PMBalance. There's plenty of times I don't have a bag and I accept a disposable bag cause of methods just wouldn't work. The key is to make sure it's packed next time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Kailey Corder 4/21/2020 2:51 PMI try to avoid signing up for mail I don't need since I'm tethered to my computer most often! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Kailey Corder 4/21/2020 2:51 PMI'm really bad with take-out boxes and stuff like that. I don't know how to navigate eating out or ordering take out or even doing curbside pickup without avoiding these single use items. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Kailey Corder 4/21/2020 2:50 PMThis is a hard one for me. I think my journey for this topic is just starting as well but I've found it's fun to find ways to use pieces in more than one way like wearing a dress with a jean jacket but also under a sweater. little things like that! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Kailey Corder 4/21/2020 2:49 PMan "R" guided lifestyle is something I'm just beginning so I'm excited to learn about the ways I can incorporate these principles into how I live! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Kailey Corder 4/21/2020 2:48 PMaccessibility to fresh water. I realized how privileged we are in the US when I traveled to India and we had to rely on bottled water. it opened my eyes to the resources we have that we take for granted -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Kailey Corder 4/21/2020 2:47 PMi use a mug! it's my favorite and I've found it's helpful when the dish holds more meaning than being just a dish. my friends and I all have the same one so it connects us and we laugh and send pictures when we use it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Work from HomeIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. How have you used technology to replace in-person meetings or work this year?
Kailey Corder 4/21/2020 2:46 PMas a student studying from home, I'm finding it's not the same. we need human interaction! so this act for environmental justice would probably be something I wouldn't opt to do and would choose other positive things instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go For A Daily Walk OutsideFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Kailey Corder 4/21/2020 2:45 PMahhhh it's like a mind reset. not being able to go outside and being cooped up all day on a computer has really shown how essential interact with nature is so human's happiness.
