April's actions
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Transportation
Go by Bike
I will commute by bike 2 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?
April Crissman 4/27/2020 5:11 PMWhile biking to deposit birthday money I recieved in the mail, I biked 4 miles there and back instead of driving since that distance was extremly do-able and provided me good exercise and vitamin D from the sunshine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhen you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? How can knowing their food producers enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?
April Crissman 4/27/2020 5:07 PMAn advantage of knowing where the food you are eating comes from is being able to go find out how it was produced if you are concerned about the use chemical fertilizers and pesticides. I believe that eating locally-sourced foods does indeed provide a better quality of life compared to factory produced or internationally and/or globally transported. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
April Crissman 4/27/2020 3:34 PMI substituted some of my regular food items for ones that had more sustainable packaging that was a recyclable plastic material. The cheese subes that had been buying from the Kroger brand used single-use plastics so I switched to the deli and the cheese from there was a little more expensive, but the packaging was the option I was looking for. I like to reuse the containers after washing them for storage for food or other things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
April Crissman 4/27/2020 3:25 PMSince I own a vehicle and commute to the grocery store, I always have reuseable bags in there for when I need to go get food. This way if I accidenlty leave them in the car, I can always remember that I have bags in the car and I can just use the cart to transfer these items into the bags. No hassle for me to reduce my plastic waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
April Crissman 4/27/2020 3:17 PMI can express my character of not constantly buying new merchandise by wearing handmade jewlery and handsewn clothing both made from recycled material that I stumble upon or create myself. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
April Crissman 4/27/2020 3:14 PMThe next step I could take beyond reducing my shower time to 5 minutes is by showering only when I need to not when I want to which is like everyday, but it is not necessary.
