Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

plastic bags! I have recently switched to using reusable bags at the grocery store. I no longer use the plastic or paper bags at the local grocery store. I feel that I am saving 50-100 plastic/paper bags each month by making this switch! The new reusable bags are way more convenient, stronger and do not rip as easily as the paper and plastic ones do! plus you can carry more and heavier items in them!

    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

I have been practing this new shower technique for over a month now and I must say that I do not run out of hot water anymore! I feel like I have already made an impact on the world. Doing this can save you money on your water bill, heating bill and can cut down on the misuse of our earths fresh clean water.

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

It feels great to know that something so simple as to switching to a ru-usable cup can make such an incredible difference in the world. I have recently went out and bought me a nice, cute coffee cup so that I can now help by saving the planet from pollution. Since I am a big coffee drinker I think this is going to make a HUGE impact!

Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

I have decided to stop buying plastic water bottles and went out and bought a Primo Water dispenser instead! Now I can refill my large 5 gallon water jug with water from our home and use it to our convenience. Now instead of creating waste from plastic bottles, I will now use reusable cups with lids and built in straws for when I want to take water with me on the go. This also ensures me that the water I am drinking is safe, clean, and from my own personal well so that way I know that the water I am drinking is the best!

    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?

    Destiny Cutrell's avatar
    Destiny Cutrell 12/17/2018 11:04 AM
You can easily utilize every part of a vegetable in many ways. You can use skins such as potato skins and mix them into a hearty potato salad. You can also use tops and stalks to help flavor a hearty vegetable soup. When I have ran out of options for each part of the food I go to my last resource. I can either use it as food to feed my chickens or made a delicious dinner for my dogs using the scraps and some of their favorite dog food and gravy!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Destiny Cutrell's avatar
    Destiny Cutrell 12/17/2018 10:58 AM
I think one of the reasons why people in North America eat more meats than other countries is mainly because of fast food restaurants. Places such as Mc.Donalds and Burger King has made it possible for Americans to eat a big juicy burger for only a dollar. It is also made and served fast and convenient through a drive through window. This has ultimately made Americans lazy and has shifted people towards buying and eating meat products and fast food rather than preparing and cooking a healthy meal with fruits and vegetables and other healthy choices. We should open more restaurants and fast food places that serve other food choices such as Vegetarian foods, healthy foods, salad bars, etc....

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Choose Organic Ingredients
Many people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?

    Destiny Cutrell's avatar
    Destiny Cutrell 10/11/2018 5:30 PM
Yes, I believe that organic farming could defiantly feed the world. If everyone grew their own fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc... they could also use farm animals to help make up for the dairy, meats and other food sources they need to survive. People could defiantly live good if they went all organic and done the hard work needed to be sustainable on their own farm and products.

    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

I use many different gardening techniques. I have an outdoor plot of land designated for our outdoor garden. We also have many hanging baskets hanging in our house and a bay-window that my husband built for me to put pots in. I also have outdoor pots outside my home with vegies and herbs growing in them.
