Shila's actions

Waste

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Building Resilience

Meet My Neighbors

I will meet 1 new neighbor(s) each day.

Waste

Use Reusable Bags

If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

COMPLETED 20

Healthy Sleep

Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 120 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Locally-Sourced Meals

I will source 1 meal(s) each day from local producers.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Building Resilience

Buy From a Farmers Market

I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

More Fruits and Veggies

I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Happiness

I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

I think this challenge has impacted me in positive ways - it started as an assignment and since I've done things I've never done nor thought of before. Now I can stay that I have tried completely local grown meals and made many new friends!

I am enjoying this challenge and everything I have accomplished I just wish I could keep track of how many source meals I've eaten since! I've enjoyed my new "diet"

I feel good - I'm a naturally busy person and there is a lot going on in my life at the moment but I've been feeling better otherwise. Once this stress is cut out I'm sure this new diet will really shine!

How do you feel now? I know that more Whole Foods makes me less tired and lethargic.

For it to already have over a thousand points I would say that is a positive thing! Can't wait to see how far we are able to make it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Locally-Sourced Meals
If you were to only eat what is in season locally from now on, what would be the most difficult food item for you to give up? Why?

    Shila Davis's avatar
    Shila Davis 3/30/2021 10:46 PM
Lettuce - I like to eat a lot of salads and different dishes with lettuce. Having to give it up would suck.
I was trying to think of fruit and vegetables but I don't typically eat to much of those and if I do it's not something that would be difficult.

Diana - you’re so right (about the pineapples).
I didn’t think about pineapples and I love LOVE LOOOVE Pineapples. 😋

I would have such a hard time giving up all the sweet slightly tropical fruits. I love pineapples, a second close fav is coconuts. And pineapples are just so much better fresh and in season but they are so easy for me to eat.

For me, It's apples. I probably eat 3-4 a day.

What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

    Switch to local grown food!

Action Track: Building Resilience Meet My Neighbors
In what ways can you create more real and meaningful interactions with friends — or strangers — each week?

    Shila Davis's avatar
    Shila Davis 3/30/2021 10:43 PM
I can smile more and take time to actually talk with them. On a daily basis we hold many "short conversations" or "small talk" but I could really take time to talk with someone and not in a way that makes them feel as if I'm going to walk away and not care.

Though it is hard to communicate with people during the days of Covid, it is important to stay connected with people and try to stay positive in these strange times.

Connecting with people, even if it's just saying hello when you pass, can impact hem in ways you may never know. Sometimes just letting people know they are seen and welcomed makes them feel less isolated.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Shila Davis's avatar
    Shila Davis 3/30/2021 10:42 PM
Reduce: I can cut down on my use of plastic bottles and when I do properly dispose of them to the recycling bin.
Reuse: If I do get grocery bags (plastic) I can reuse them for a garbage bag or as storage. I could even refill a plastic water bottle in order to reuse it.
Refuse: I can say no to plastic bags and straws all together!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

    Shila Davis's avatar
    Shila Davis 3/30/2021 10:40 PM
For some reason I keep a laundry basket in my trunk - if I was to forget a plastic bag I would just carry the items if able or take the cart out and fill up the basket.
If I did have to get a disposable one I would find another way to use them. Currently I use grocery bags over again as long as if they aren't ripped. I use them for garbage bags and storing items/food.

After constantly having kids in my car losing things or wanting things to take to the park I realized that a laundry basket is very much needed! (So much easier to carry)

    • Diana Segerstrom's avatar
      Diana Segerstrom 4/01/2021 11:39 AM
I like the idea of having a laundry basket in your car it could be really useful in some situations, it makes it easier to carry everything. I have a habit of leaving a big empty beach bag in my car in case I need something to carry extra things in or to throw blankets in if I want to take a trip to the lake.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Shila Davis's avatar
    Shila Davis 3/30/2021 10:38 PM
I use straws when going to restaurants, plastic plates/cups/utensils when in big group events, as well as plastic bags and wrap.
What I plan to do is just drink out of the cups or use a metal straw (which I have). I do try and avoid using plastic plates and cups because I don't mind doing dishes but now instead of giving in I'm going to put up more of a fight to use glass plates and cups. Then when it comes to plastic bags I'm going to start using reusable grocery bags. As for the wraps and gallon bags I have yet to come up with a solution for that.

I had to look up beeswax wraps - they are interesting.

As for not using straws I do it until my family goes, “other peoples mouths touch that cup why put your mouth on it”. Then I get a straw to keep them from complaining.
The whole time I’m like guys the cups at our house has everyone’s mouths on it. Not only that but people use straws here and it’s been cleaned. 😂

I use beeswax wraps. I have a few reusable ziplock-type bags. They are pretty pricey, but I really don't need a lot of them.

I would say the most single item uses I use are straws from restaurants, and using paper napkins. I could switch out napkins with cloth ones, but I think about how much work it would be to keep up with washing them. I could also easily stop using straws when I go out, which sometimes I do, but not as often as I should.
