  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Spending time outside during this fall season is something I want to do so badly! The tricky part is juggling work and break time in order to balance my workload. In order to get outside in the fresh air, when the days are nice and weather is good I have begun to do work outside more often. I think being outside is so good for mental and physical health and in the future I want to do more to be outside while at college and juggling classes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

This is definitely something I have always wanted to improve upon. My dad would always pick on me at home for my long showers with the limited hot water we have. My goal is to cut my shower time in half and this activity will definitely help me improve in that area while also allowing me to be more conscious of water usage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

Over the long weekend my friends and I took a trip to the Adirondacks. During this trip I got in a lot of outdoor actions for my ecochallege as well as connecting with nature. It was a 5 hour drive which was a lot but definitely not worth taking a plane over.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Learn About Renewable Energy
What inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?

I am an Environmental Sustainability, Health and Safety major and a key component of sustainable development technology is renewable energy. I have taken some classes on such technologies but doing further research has expanded my knowledge and I now understand the importance of an inclusive renewable energy grid.

The simplicity actions were really eye-opening for me. They made me recognize that I don't necessarily prioritize my mental health and wellbeing as much as I should. With this realization I have decided to focus more on my mental health and take healthy breaks from schoolwork to recharge and rest so I don't become overwhelmed. Actions like taking mental breaks, cleaning, getting enough sleep, and spending time outside in the fresh air are all things I plan to commit to doing more in the upcoming weeks and beyond.
