Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Annie Delaney's avatar
    Annie Delaney 3/29/2021 6:19 PM
Richer countries are able to eat more meat because they have the land and resources it takes to support raising the animals and then process the meat. However, by eating more meat, there is greater water usage, deforestation for grazing, animal waste (and thus greenhouse gases) and various other negative impacts that are not sustainable for the Earth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?

    Annie Delaney's avatar
    Annie Delaney 3/29/2021 6:15 PM
In localized food systems, local indigenous communities would rely on traditional knowledge of the land to provide food for their community and each community would have control over what their people consume. However, in most of the modern global food systems, many foods are processed and focus on being convenient, rather than healthy and then are distributed throughout large areas.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Host A Watch Party
What did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?

    Annie Delaney's avatar
    Annie Delaney 3/29/2021 6:09 PM
I watched Seaspiracy which was mainly about the negative impact that commercial fishing has on the ocean. A lot of the information in the documentary was very shocking and made me want to reduce or even eliminate seafood from my diet. Definitely would recommend!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Annie Delaney's avatar
    Annie Delaney 3/26/2021 7:25 PM
A fun way to express yourself that doesn't require fast fashion or buying more clothes is to find new combinations of clothes you already own by experimenting with different items that you haven't worn together before. Another great way to avoid fast fashion is through thrifting or doing a clothes swap with friends/family.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

    Annie Delaney 3/10/2021 12:16 PM
Typically my family will can tomatoes and freeze sweet corn from my grandparents garden. We also enjoy making our own jam from strawberries. Today, I made a blueberry jam, and would love to try to can or make jam from other fruits when they are more in season.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

    Annie Delaney's avatar
    Annie Delaney 3/01/2021 8:39 PM
I have been working on decreasing screen time more recently, especially in a time when everything has to be done online because of the pandemic so it wasn't too difficult. I noticed that it was easier to find other things to do when my phone wasn't in sight and that the longer I unplugged, the less I felt the desire to be on my phone. Today, instead of spending time on my phone, I made dinner for my family.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Annie Delaney's avatar
    Annie Delaney 3/01/2021 8:35 PM
By eating without distractions, I am more aware of what foods and how much I am consuming and it allows me to appreciate the meal more overall.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Meditate
What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

    Annie Delaney's avatar
    Annie Delaney 3/01/2021 3:28 PM
Personally, I'd like to invest more time reflecting on my feelings, whether it is simply acknowledging them, or digging deeper into why I am feeling that way. I'd also like to reflect more on ways that I can be more mindful in everyday life so that I'm not merely going through the motions of life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

    Annie Delaney's avatar
    Annie Delaney 3/01/2021 3:24 PM
In response to Berry's assertion, I feel that there definitely is some truth to it in which no matter who you are, there is some sort of appreciation for nature that is innate. As much as some people may complain about the weather during particular times of year, there is always beauty that can be celebrated, especially in sunrises/sunsets.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Annie Delaney's avatar
    Annie Delaney 3/01/2021 3:18 PM
Rachel Carson's quote does ring true for me as often times spending time in nature allows for peace and quiet to reflect inwardly on aspects of my life that I may not have if I were to remain indoors. The implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors is one of emotional stagnation that is unable to reach its full potential in terms of compassion and self development.
