Watch the film Creatures of Convenience on CBC Gem
Check out the film Creatures of Convenience on CBC Gem for FREE! This is a local film about the the impact our culture of convenience has on the environment. If you liked the film, consider attending our Earth Day event on Thursday, April 22: "In Conversation: Creatures of Convenience," a Q&A session with the film's producer and filmmaker, moderated by KPU instructor Dr. Paul Richard! To complete this action, you only have to watch the film - but we'd love to see you at the event as well! :)

Sheldon Desa 3/13/2021 9:45 PMWe all have a role to play when it comes to waste reduction; individuals, governments, businesses, etc.
As we advocate for change, it is important to remember that we are all on the same team as we look to solve problems and make the world a better place.-
Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:31 AMYes, definitely - if the more sustainable choice was the most convenient choice, people would be much more likely to act in a sustainable manner! That's where the government comes in with regulation, etc!

Sheldon Desa 3/13/2021 9:29 PMWhen it comes to recycling, I believe that there is a lot of confusion and frustration associated with it. Standardizing recycling in BC and finding ways to make it more convenient will increase the likelihood of people doing it correctly and habitually. Do you agree? If not what do you think we can do to improve the current recycling situation?-
Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:33 AMI totally agree! I also think it's important to make sure producers are responsible for the waste their products create. This is called "extended producer responsibility" (EPR) and it exists for some items in BC, but not all of them. You can learn more about EPR here: https://www.rcbc.ca/recycling-programs/epr

Sheldon Desa 3/13/2021 9:23 PMCanada has a plastic problem. For a country that is so wealthy we only recycle LESS THAN 9% of all plastic.
Germany leads the way, recycling just over 50% of all plastic. I spent a semester studying abroad in Munich and I was impressed by the systems in place to make recycling more convenient which explains the impressive percentage.
Check out this video if you want to see how recycling is done in Germany: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txqWuVsvRrs-
Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:33 AMThanks, Sheldon! That's a great resource!

Sheldon Desa 3/13/2021 9:13 PMAs consumers we have power with the way we consume. Cheap, poor quality, fast fashion exists as a result of consumer demand. It is easy for companies to make the products and the short lifecycle ensures that the customers will be back soon to buy the latest trends and replace their worn out items that have been worn only a handful of times.-
Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:34 AMDefinitely! I like thrift shopping - so many people buy things and never wear them, so you can find some great deals on new stuff at thrift stores.

Sheldon Desa 3/13/2021 9:03 PMIf you haven't already, check out the CBC Gem documentary Creatures of Convenience. It looks at the consumer culture we live in and how the systems that exist, our surroundings, etc. all impact our efforts to live sustainably.

Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:35 AMThanks for watching, Sheldon! If you'd like to watch a Q&A with the filmmakers, check out our event on Thursday, April 22: https://libguides.kpu.ca/library/news/Creatures-of-Convenience

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Watch the film Creatures of Convenience on CBC GemWhat surprised you the most in the film?
Sheldon Desa 3/13/2021 8:39 PMIf you haven't already, check out the CBC Gem documentary Creatures of Convenience. It looks at the consumer culture we live in and how the systems that exist, our surroundings, etc. all impact our efforts to live sustainably.-
Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:35 AMOh, yeah. Plastic is EVERYWHERE! -
Sheldon Desa 3/13/2021 9:08 PMIt was quite in-depth especially for a short doc and the part that surprised me the most was that even products we don't consider to be plastic, such as clothes, actually contain oil-based materials

Sheldon Desa 3/12/2021 10:19 PMAs this week comes to an end it is important to reflect on our progress. Ask yourself what went well and figure out where there is room for improvement.
For me, my eating and exercise actions are going well. The areas I can improve on are spending less time on social media/email and regulating my sleep schedule. Awareness is the first step to change.-
Hina Kuae 3/16/2021 2:08 PMI'm 100% with you!
I've improved my exercise actions but still need to use less time on my phone before going to sleep -
Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:41 AMSocial media is super addictive! Have you tried removing the apps from your phone? You can still access the websites through Chrome but usually they're so buggy it's not as fun... haha!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Sheldon Desa 3/12/2021 1:34 PMHaving a herb garden is a great way to give yourself easy access to fresh herbs to add to your dishes. Rosemary and thyme are my favourites. What are yours?-
Hina Kuae 3/16/2021 2:12 PMYes! and the best thing is that you can buy fresh herbs at grocery store and replant them!
I did it last summer but the only thing that survived was peppermint haha -
Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:42 AMMy chives and parsley survived all winter on my balcony! My favourite is basil, but my plant is always on the verge of death...

Sheldon Desa 3/12/2021 1:28 PMHere is a link about the Canucks zero waste program https://www.nhl.com/canucks/fans/zero-waste-program. It is very basic and I would like to see the organization set some bigger goals regarding transportation, arena food options, etc.-
Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:44 AMFor sure! Zero waste is way more than just separating garbage - how about some reusable items?

Sheldon Desa 3/12/2021 1:25 PMDecluttering my workspace helps me with mental clarity and gives me the ability to focus better. Although it may seem like a waste of time or even procrastinating, make it a habit to have a clean workspace.-
Hina Kuae 3/16/2021 2:14 PMJapanese have many techniques to declutter!
I love Marie Kondo's videos -
Erin Pedersen 3/15/2021 9:43 AMThis is SO true! It's a lot harder now that we're doing everything from home - it seems like it gets messy so fast!
