REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Kristian Fox 10/12/2018 1:45 PMThe next step I can take is to invest in sustainable hygiene companies and buy soaps that don't have micro-plastics in them. I also would like to look into how much a "serving" could be, so the least amount of soap/shampoo/etc. I need and be mindful of that amount while I take showers.-
Ava Warfel 10/13/2018 4:57 PMI agree, its really tough to not use to much of certain shower products... its something that I really need to work on too.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Kristian Fox 10/12/2018 1:42 PMThis is a hard question to answer, but I think that American culture is a major contributor to meat-focused eating. There is such a major focus on high-protein, low-carb diets in the health industry, there is a major interest in fine dining and prime cuts of meats, and there is a major stereotype connecting masculinity and meat. I think there is also a major ignorance issue, where people refuse to believe the way their living is unhealthy, and I think to shift food culture to a plant-based diet, we need to educate and inform society on health, nutrition, and the harms of meat-focused meals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Kristian Fox 10/12/2018 1:36 PMI would like to try to shift towards a consistent sleeping pattern that has me waking up earlier. I get in a good amount of sleep, but end up staying up late just to wake up late. This still works with my work schedule and with my everyday life, but I know I could be more productive with my time daily. I would like to wake up earlier, go to bed earlier, and also work in a daily nap of 30 minutes consistently. This is actually what I have been finding works really well for me to be successful during my day while also helping me sleep better at night. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Kristian Fox 10/12/2018 1:33 PMThis fact does not surprise me. American culture is focused on eating a lot and buying even more. We have massive refrigerators full of food that isn't meant to be a meal. Because so many people buy based off of wants and convenience, we get away from our plans and what we need. If it were clear the money my family was saving by reducing our food waste, I would try to convince my family to invest this money into energy efficiency upgrades. That way my savings could produce more savings. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Kristian Fox 10/12/2018 1:27 PMOn campus, electricity is mostly generated from the university's cogeneration plant, where natural gas powers steam turbines, producing electricity. The steam is then used to heat the campus. This system, although more efficient than a lot of other forms of power generation, is still reliant on fossil fuels and can still be improved on. To reduce Bucknell's impact on the environment, it would be best if Bucknell actively progressed towards all renewable energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Talk To My Friends and ClassmatesWhat makes you feel connected to your campus, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?
Kristian Fox 10/12/2018 1:23 PMMy peers at my university feels like a very close-knit group because of the very personal connections we have. These connections come from sharing our stories, and discussing things outside work and class. We're all very good friends because of the bond we have. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Express My SupportWhat sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent on your campus? In your hometown? Where you live currently?
Kristian Fox 10/12/2018 1:20 PMSome of the most prominent issues in southern Nevada is the support and growth of renewable energy. Nevada is the sunniest state, and there are upcoming questions on the ballot that can really help support renewable energy, and I've been reaching out to educate my policymakers and community to support these questions when they vote.
