Waste
ANYBAG PROJECT SINGLE USE PLASTIC COLLECTION
I will bring in collected single use plastics for aNY Bag Project to ISB to help re-purpose single use plastics into reusable bags and reduce plastic waste in my community.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 7 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Community
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 7 new neighbor(s) each day.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Community
Help Others
I will offer to help 4 person(s) who are in need each day.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 60-minute walk outside each day.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 15 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Enjoy the Sunrise/SunsetFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Leena Friedman 3/12/2021 5:26 AMI think that it is true because watching the sunset is so calming and beautiful! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Help OthersIn your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?
Leena Friedman 3/11/2021 5:40 AMI think that in order for a community to be considered a community, everyone has to support each other and everyone NEEDS to be considered equal -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Meet My NeighborsIn what ways can you create more real and meaningful interactions with friends — or strangers — each week?
Leena Friedman 3/11/2021 5:38 AMI created little cards, for everyone in our town and I went around to drop them off to everyone -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Work from HomeIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. How have you used technology to replace in-person meetings or work this year?
Leena Friedman 3/11/2021 5:35 AMI have been trying to walk as much as I can, even in the cold to go to the market by walking with my dog, mom, etc... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsSwitching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Leena Friedman 3/11/2021 5:34 AMALL of our lightbulbs in Brooklyn are LED lights to help save the environment -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Leena Friedman 3/11/2021 5:32 AMWhenever we go to whole foods, we always try to bring our own bags, because it is better for the environment
