Andrew's actions

Create Your Own Action

Try Carpooling

I will commute by carpool 10 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 6.96 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Turn it off

I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Transportation

Learn More and Advocate

Access to public transportation is a social justice issue! I will learn about the need for public transportation in my community and tell 3 friends or classmates each day about the issue.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

I am enjoying this challenge. But i am concerned I do not log into the website often enough to complete all the necessary tasks

    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

We visited the energy plant for Excel in our class and I was surprised at how the process worked. It smelled terrible in there and all they do is burn trash at a massive rate. This is obviously not good for the earth but it runs the electricity. I hope we can find a much better way to go about this process.

That energy plant supplies very very very little of the energy in our mix.  Most of our electricity comes from coal and nuclear plants.  We are part of a massive grid, and the waste incineration plant close to our home is just the tiniest little provider of energy.

I think this is a cool way to stay mindful of our carbon footprint and try to go green is a fun way with achievements and competition. I am not sure if I am using this website the right way, but I have been doing challenges and earning points! Very cool!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

We learned a lot about recycling when we went to the landfill. Typically the things I consume are pretty obvious whether it is trash or recycling. I however, I have been more mindful when throwing something out to consider if it could be recycled. Then I google whether the item is recyclable or not.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Learn More and Advocate
How do the differences in access to reliable transportation affect your community? What would you like to see change?

My bike got stolen and I just recently got my car up at school, so I spent a lot of time walking to get to places. I did not like it and I remember how much better riding a bike was for times like that, too bad it got stolen. They even cut the lock to take my bike, and after that I walked everywhere I had to go.

Sorry to hear about that! Hope you can get a cheap bike to try again, like from the Rec Center.  U locks from CryptoLok don't get cut.

What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety.

Typically I like driving my car, but at least when I offer to give people rides home from work or anywhere around town, at least I know we are keeping their car off the road to help pollution on a small scale.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I really like to use my Yeti mug and it keeps the coffee warmer for longer than a tradition Styrofoam cup. It was nice to enjoy coffee without harming the environment. Just need to try to remember the re-useable cup whenever I plan on grabbing a cup of Joe!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

Keep in mind what you throw away makes an impact on the earth. If it cannot decompose naturally, chances are your waste can end up in eco-systems that become a threat to the species that live in it.
