Sandra's actions
Create Your Own Action
Forage for My Food
I will use the resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Transportation
Advocate for Greener Vehicles
I will spend at least 30 minutes assessing the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on fuel-efficient vehicles.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or organize car sharing with my neighbors or classmates to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 60 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 60 minute(s) each day.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 120 minute(s)

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Sandra Gonzalez 6/30/2019 8:59 PMI like to see cute pictures and videos of my friends and family but I can see how it gets toxic. I feel good about limiting it however it gets tough to not check it often some times it is just about looking when I am bored or procrastinating. -
Sandra Gonzalez 6/17/2019 6:24 PMMy boyfriend and I have decided to change our diet as of today to improve our health. We have decided to cut out most carbs and reduce our red meat consumption. We will see how well we do cutting out these things that were a regular part of our diet. -
Sandra Gonzalez 6/03/2019 9:02 AMMy boyfriend and I spent yesterday walking our dog around our neighborhood, we walked to get coffee (did not use any straws), walked to get lunch and the only time we used the car was to get gas for the week. We are trying to walk more around our neighborhood as its good for my dogs health as well. We are trying to make sure we stay active.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Sandra Gonzalez 5/29/2019 8:14 PMI have made sure to keep about 3-4 reusable bags in my car as well as placing them in my boyfriends car so we are never left without one. If we go to the store and don't have one we typically carry the items without a bag. If we ever have to buy a plastic bag we usually reuse it for our recycling so it does not go to waste. I think we have been pretty successful in using our reusable bags no matter when we go to the store though I am sure there is room for improvement. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Sandra Gonzalez 5/29/2019 8:09 PMI have purchased reusable cups for my self, boyfriend and boss. We each have two one for hot liquids and one for cold. We stopped using cups at work making sure to use our reusable cups. Apart from the styrofoam type cups our work requires a lid, our reusable cups eliminate excess use of the cup and plastic lid. Slowly but surely I have been influencing my coworkers to move towards reusable cups hoping that as a company overall we will reduce the amount of cups we are throwing away, especially given that these cups are not being recycled.-

Sandra Gonzalez 5/29/2019 7:57 PMThis weekend my boyfriend's family was visiting. We made sure we carpool to visit seaport village. We ate at a local restaurant made sure not to use any straws at the restaurant and we did ask about where they received the local seafood however the waitress did not know. We walked around the area and limited our carbon foot print, enjoying the day versus adding to polluting the area.
