REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Layla Gordon 10/14/2018 2:32 PMI notice that the more I limit my social media, the less I feel like I need it. Sometimes I don't have my phone for half the day and just don't notice. Other times I won't check into instagram for several days and feel no desire to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Support a Sharing EconomyWhat are some of the barriers to sharing economies? What is your plan for supporting or creating one in your community?
Layla Gordon 9/26/2018 3:41 PMA barrier to a sharing economy is movement with time. In a few months I'll be going abroad, and my community will need to replace what I contribute. One of my roommates is graduating this year, so the things she contributes will need to be replaced. A sharing economy requires trust and permanency, which not every community has. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Layla Gordon 9/26/2018 3:39 PMRather than buying a trash bin and a bulletin board for my dorm room this semester, I used an old box for the trash bin and the flaps of the box taped to the wall for a bulletin board. I might think I need something, but with a little imagination, find a way to live and thrive without it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Carry my TrashWhat one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?
Layla Gordon 9/26/2018 3:37 PMI could bring reusable utensils with me everywhere I go so that if I buy food on the go without anticipating it beforehand I don't have to use plastic.-
Ava Warfel 10/14/2018 3:02 PMI've been doing this lately, and its honestly a lot easier than I thought! You've got it :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Layla Gordon 9/26/2018 3:36 PMIf I focus on negativity I'll quickly become hopeless and want to give up, whereas if I focus on the things I love and appreciate in this world I'll be motivated to preserve them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Layla Gordon 9/26/2018 3:34 PMI can organize events with environmental club to teach people how to cook and buy food more sustainably, and be a part of the events other people in my community organize. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn More about Food ApartheidWhat can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Layla Gordon 9/18/2018 6:47 AMWhen there's limited or no nutritious food access in a community the two populations of the community tend to be malnourished or obese. Sometimes both. Fast food can take over and fill the diets of the community members and health problems across the board just increase. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Food LifestyleMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
Layla Gordon 9/18/2018 6:42 AMI completely agree. Health shouldn't be treating symptoms, but preventing problems -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Layla Gordon 9/18/2018 6:40 AMI go for runs by the river so that I get my outdoor time in with my exercise time. I like to lift with friends to make it a social activity, and hike with friends on the weekends to get the best of all worlds. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?
Layla Gordon 9/18/2018 6:37 AMRather than throwing out carrot tops, I can make a pesto out of them. I can also use them as parsley in salads and recipes. The skins of cucumbers, potatoes, beets, etc. are even more nutritious than the inside, so I see no reason to peel my foods before cooking them either.
