Day 4 of the Campus EcoChallenge! Today, our highlighted category is "building resilience." I've been reflecting on how sustainability is inherently intertwined with social justice issues, especially given the recent police killing of Daunte Wright here in the Twin Cities. As sustainability includes social, economic, and environmental dimensions, it's essential that our environmental activism includes everyone and in particular, the most marginalized groups in society. Communities of color are disproportionately burdened with environmental hazards, pollution, and undesirable land uses (think: sewers, landfills, smelly factories, etc.). The systems that perpetuate these environmental inequalities (racism, capitalism, white supremacy) are the SAME systems that allow police brutality against black folks to continue.

While the EcoChallenge is a great way to think about your own personal choices and environmental impact, it's essential to also advocate for systemic changes. To slow the impacts of climate change, we must empower and allocate more resources to marginalized communities to end cycles of poverty and inequalities embedded in capitalism and work towards a cleaner, healthier world. Environmental action cannot and should not be separated from social justice issues!

I've done a lot in this category before the challenge.  I've been working on my water consumption this year.
