REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Mindfulness PracticeWhat best helped you with your Mindfulness Practice? How does Mindfulness keep you grounded and sustain your work with compassion?
Melody Her 4/25/2021 7:29 PMMusic and being alone in a private, closed space is critical to my mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is important to me because when I can be mindful of myself, I can in turn be mindful of others. Practicing kindness, self-love, and compassion inspires those around you to do so and I think that is extremely important. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Melody Her 4/25/2021 7:24 PMIt is a WONDERFUL ingredient because with creativity comes so much variety and authenticity :D! Creativity allows for so many uses and fluidity of 1 or 2 items that can be repurposed :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Melody Her 4/25/2021 7:20 PMI feel present haha :) . As much as my device helps me connected with friends and family from across the country and back in Laos, I like feeling present and off the grid knowing that social media will always be around if I ever need it but also realizing I never really needed my social media to begin with. I also notice I used to spend a lot of free time scrolling without purpose and that took up a lot of valuable time I could have been spending with my family/friends or going outside. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Melody Her 4/25/2021 7:14 PMPeace, clarity, love, justice. It's hard to explain why I chose peace because in some ways, it can be quite complex. I knew I wasn't going to choose happiness though because I feel like we expect too much out of what happiness should feel like and what it should be. I choose peace because it is an overall state of mind, body and soul whereas, while it is wonderful to be happy :), happiness is a temporary state of being in one moment.
Clarity because I often pray for clarity when we live in such a fast-paced society and don't feel like we can always catch up. Clarity grounds us in where we need to be. Centering us upon our values.
Love because I love love :) When you genuinely love someone/something, it's such a GOOD feeling. I think we need love everywhere!
Justice because without justice, there will be no peace. The fight for justice is why I am who I am and everyone deserves it. It should always be preached, and strived for from good people with good hearts and are willing to get into good trouble. We need more of justice :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Melody Her 4/25/2021 4:31 PMSaving energy!!! Or encouraging my community to carpool to reduce gas emissions! In addition, learn from each other about reusable alternatives! I love to learn about how I can be more sustainable so I can use those new-learned skills to teach others around me as well :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Disconnect from EmailNotice how much time you were spending checking email away from work and make note of that. Now that you have stepped away from it and have not been checking, what changes are you noticing in your thoughts, use of time, stress and energy levels?
Melody Her 4/25/2021 4:27 PMI have a habit of checking my email almost religiously as much as someone who regularly checks their social medias. I do this under anxiety and stress. This weekend specifically was my birthday and I worked really hard on disconnecting from my email. This allowed me more time to get outside, spend time with my baby brother, enjoy my own company and focus on something other than school/work emails! Overall, this did help with stress and energy levels! -
Melody Her 4/25/2021 4:23 PMToday, my ecochallenge actions intertwined with each other. I attended a community clean up for Earth Week with a non-profit organization, Visual Black Justice. I went alone but I met amazing people and made new connections! It was a great experience :) -
Melody Her 4/23/2021 11:58 AMHi everyone! Today, my little brother and I decided to go outside to play in the rain! I proposed the idea of walking to our neighborhood bus stops to pick up trash and recycling. It wasn't too windy or cold so we were able to walk to a couple bus stops in the rain for about 45 minutes collecting any litter we saw. My little brother was very eager to pick up all of the trash!
We had only walked 5 minutes and our first bag was already full so we had to come back home to grab more gloves and trash/recycling bags. We were both disheartened at how much litter we were finding on the side walks from plastic bottles and straws to underwear and even half of a rubber stepping mat. While we walked, we spoke about mother nature and how she cares for us and we also talked about the realities of climate change.
My little brother, who is almost 9 years old, said they aren't teaching him climate change in school so he was unfamiliar of the term. An example I chose to talk to him about was the melting ice caps in the arctic and it made him even more eager to pick up more trash. I've done community clean ups before in larger groups, however, this time was much more personal being my own neighborhood with just my brother and I. This experience was very important to me and I won't make it the last time to clean up trash around my neighborhood!-
Rachel Schauer 4/24/2021 5:07 PMThis is a wonderful idea! Picking up trash is a great way to start conversations about climate change and environmental issues. Great work!
