REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
BRAXTON IGNE 5/03/2020 9:00 PMThese advisories are really important to me because the only meat that I eat is fish. After looking at the information at seafoodwatch.org I was pretty alarmed at the amount of fish and seafood listed on the "avoid" category overlap with fish that I eat on a weekly basis. I had never really thought about the effects that industrial fishing can have on sea life. In the future I will try my very best to check out what kind of fish I buy at grocery stores and where the fish comes from at my favorite sushi spots in town. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Tend a GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
BRAXTON IGNE 5/03/2020 8:38 PMI can't say that I can pinpoint one single moment when I have felt my perspective altered in nature. I think that it is more about repetition than one single life-changing moment. I think that things change slowly, not all at once. Ever since I was young my parents have taken me to travel and explore nature all over the country. I spend a significant amount of time as a young child on the road. I'm extremely thankful for this, and this is perhaps the reason that I can't pinpoint a moment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Practice Gratitude for EarthKathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How can we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?
BRAXTON IGNE 5/03/2020 8:31 PMI think that I would agree. When we take time to appreciate what we have and the immense beauty around us we can't help but want to protect it. It's simply human nature to protect our own self interest and the things that we feel grateful for. The Earth has graced us with food to eat, beauty to behold, and the resources that we use every single moment of every day. Those of us who acknowledge these gifts must feel at least some moral obligation to protect these things for ourselves and future generations. As individuals we can cultivate this gratitude through simply paying attention and noticing the things around us on a day to day basis. We can also go out into nature, by ourselves or with others, and take in the beauty around us. As a society I think that we need to shift away from a culture of greed and towards a culture of gratitude. We should think about our needs versus our wants and strive to live a more simple life.
