Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 3 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community while observing best practices in my region for not spreading COVID-19.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 60 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Water

Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 10/07/2021 7:12 AMOne thing I can do to improve the water systems is that when I go to creeks, rivers, or the beach, I can ensure that all my trash is being disposed of so that there aren't any harmful toxins being released in the water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 10/07/2021 7:10 AMOne environmental irresponsibility that I have seen in my community is littering. This affects how our community is preserved as well as the animals living around the community. The toxins in those products are also released int he air throughout the community since it isn't being thrown away properly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsMany people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 10/07/2021 6:56 AMThe world can survive off just organic food and it is possible. Through each community making that effort to make that change, it is possible to create a worldwide impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Use Reusable BottlesWhat are some of the needs that water meets or benefits that water provides for you?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 10/07/2021 6:54 AMWater keeps me hydrated as well as helps me stay healthy. Without drinking water, I often feel very tired and feel drained. However, drinking water often gives me energy and keeps me moving as well as feeling refreshed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 10/04/2021 11:10 AMI practice self-care by ensuring that I am mentally well, taking breaks between studying to relax. I often take a day out of the week to pamper myself by doing face masks, paint my nails, go for a walk, watch my favorite show, or doing other things I enjoy doing. I also ensure that I do my skin care routine day and night as well as following through with my other routines. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 10/04/2021 11:07 AMWhat used to stand in my way was that I often rushed throughout my day and just stopped at a nearby coffee shop to buy a coffee which meant that I wouldn't reuse my coffee cup. What has changed is that I properly managed my time to be organized and make my coffee at home before leaving to use my reusable coffee cup. It not only makes me feel more organized as I made that change but as well happier to know that I'm helping the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 10/04/2021 11:05 AMBy eating more fruits and vegetables, I clean my body by obtaining the benefits of each fruit and vegetable contain. I also feel more energized and more refreshed when I start my day with fruits and veggies. By other people eating more fruits and vegetables, they will feel and be healthier leading to less death rates due to sickness or diseases. Our planet would be healthier and there won't be as many animals being killed since meat is something that has grown and continues to grow due to the mass production of meat. By eating more vegies and fruits, will decrease the mass production of animals being killed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 9/21/2021 8:47 AMSomething I use regularly is a coffee cup, I drink coffee every morning so I tend to make it at home so I can not only save money but use my reusable cup to drink my coffee. Something that I could substitute in my daily life would be small sandwich bags that I often use to put snacks in, I could substitute it with washable reusable containers to reduce the use of plastic and waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 9/21/2021 8:44 AMI would incorporate other "R's" in my lifestyle but continuing to use reusable bottles, straws, and containers. As well as researching more ways that I could make a change in my daily life that can produce a better chance for my community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Michelle Ildefonso-Ruelas 9/21/2021 8:41 AMSome barriers that can occur when using reusable bottles and tap water is that sometimes one can get lazy or are in a rush so they rather just grab a disposable bottle of water since it is a lot easier and more readily available. When grabbing a reusable bottle you have to wash it when reusing it and then fill it up which to me isn't a hassle at all, but for others, it may be a hassle. Some advice for others to help make this a habit would be using time management to make everything easier. By washing the reusable bottle beforehand and making sure everything is timed well, it would be easier to just refill it and go.
