Julia's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Julia Kagan 10/03/2018 9:45 AMI have planned my dinner for tonight so I will be waste-free. I did this last night too! I am also carrying my waste with me so I don't have to put it in a landfill trash bin and I can compost it later. -
Julia Kagan 10/01/2018 9:25 PMI have been making an effort to reuse my plastic utensils and take-out containers. Even if something seems to be advertised as one-use, there is a good chance it could be washed and reused. Today I encouraged my friend that I ate dinner with to do the same. -
Julia Kagan 10/01/2018 9:21 PMI used the cilantro I have been growing in my room in a recipe this week! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Julia Kagan 10/01/2018 7:32 AMI have been making more of an effort to compost this year. Last year, my housing did not have a compost bin, but this year I am proud to say it is becoming a habit of mine and I am helping to educate others to do the same. -
