    Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    Balance is the essence of sustainability because if you keep consuming more resources than the can be regenerated and if you keep generating waste that the planet can't break down or absorb in a timely manner, then you are degrading the planet and ruining the prospects of future generations, not to mention the rest of the biosphere.

    I think judging people for their character goes a long way towards building a just society.  As far as building a sustainable society, treating people with decency and being open to their ideas brings more brain power to the table and helps to solve issues humanity now faces.

    Reducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

    I cancelled a magazine subscription that I barely read and I feel less cluttered now and less guilty about the paper that was wasted on a magazine that I usually would only read a few pages of. The next step I'll take is opting out of junk mail.

    I was addicted to sugar.  I feel less stressed and more calm now that I'm eating less sugar.  I'm also in better shape.

    While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    There aren't any barriers to me personally for making this a habit and I've bought a few metal reusable water bottles that I plan to use for decades if they last that long.

    Pollution of the ocean with plastics and chemicals contaminates and/or kills fish. Which can lead to humans eating microplastics or not being able to catch and sell as much fish as they used to.

    I could reduce the amount of food waste I produce by meal planning more.  I could also reuse by storing food in jars I've emptied or repurpose by using jars I've emptied to store things like thumbtacks or guitar picks instead of buying a new container for that.

    It helps me get more nutrients that my body needs to function well and eating lower on the food chain helps to reduce the amount of waste that goes into producing the food I eat.

    I can go hiking or go to the beach more.  I also tend to exercise alone because that's when I recharge. I could exercise more and see if friends wanted to go hiking or something in the excess time.
