Connor's actions
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.

Connor Lowey 9/22/2019 10:42 PMEating one meatless meal has been easy so far, since during the week I tend to not be very hungry at lunch, and can easily limit myself to non meat items. At dinner I usually have meat. I find it hard, if not impossible, to go out to eat with friends on the weekend and not buy meat. 5 minute showers has also been easier than expected, because once you get used to the pace, you stop thinking about it. I've struggled the most with making time for watching the sunrise and sunset. I am usually too busy and get distracted and miss them, but have enjoyed the times I was able to watch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Connor Lowey 9/22/2019 10:40 PMIt is easy to get lost in the busyness of our lives, but taking time to enjoy just the sunrise and sunset allows us to reconnect with the world and its beauty. It allows us to slow down, and really think about the planet, instead of just noting it in passing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Connor Lowey 9/22/2019 10:38 PMI think richer countries eat more meat because they have easier access to it, and they have the money to pay for it. Unfortunately, meat consumption has a negative impact on the planet, since a large section of land is used for allowing animals to graze, as well as pollution from large industries involved in processing it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Connor Lowey 9/10/2019 6:54 PMA next step would be to reduce water usage in other ways, such as not letting the sink run as long when doing the dishes.
