Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Ryan Magoon 12/17/2018 12:54 PMI have noticed that alot of these challenges I already do on a daily basis. But there are a few that I have ran into that I am going to start doing. This eco- challenge has given me a lot of really great ideas on how to become more sustainable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Ryan Magoon 12/17/2018 12:52 PMNow that I have lowered my showers down to 5 minute showers I can also cut back on the amount of water I use to wash my dishes. I can do this by turning off the water while I wash the dishes and only turn on the water when I am ready to rinse a entire sink full. Not leaving the water running the entire time will save ALOT of fresh water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Ryan Magoon 12/17/2018 12:51 PMI will substitute plastic grocery bags with reusable grocery bags. This will cut back on the amount of plastic and paper that goes in the trash. I will also replace coffe cups with reusable ones. This saves money and also cuts down on waste and helps save the planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsMany people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?
Ryan Magoon 12/17/2018 12:47 PMYes Organic farming can feed the world. If everyone grew their own produce and fruits, vegies and herbs in the comfort of their own home, they would ultimately save hundreds of dollars each month and they would be able to supply nearly 20% of their family's food with just home grown organic foods that they grew themselves. If everyone did this then we would save food and cut down on waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Ryan Magoon 12/17/2018 12:45 PMWe can shift a meat-focused food culture by opening more food options to the public. Rather than having so many fast food joints that sell meats and unhealthy, greasy foods, we can open salad bars and other places that serve healthy food choices and organic options. -
Ryan Magoon 12/17/2018 12:43 PMAfter having another baby girl last month I have decided that I want to do my part in making the world a safer, cleaner and more sustainable for my children and our future generations to come. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?
Ryan Magoon 12/17/2018 12:39 PMI could feed it to my chickens or my dogs or I could use the skins and stocks and other parts in a juicer and create healthy organic juice to drink or even make a vegetable soup from it.... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Ryan Magoon 10/11/2018 5:35 PMMy wife and I use many different gardening techniques. We have a large outdoor garden on our land. We also use many hanging baskets, indoor and outdoor pots, and I built my wife a large bay window for her to grow many herbs and vegetables indoors in her bay window. I also have small greenhouse buildings built on my land that I use to grow my cannabis and other foods during the winter months. All of these different ways of gardening are all very beneficial to us. Each different technique helps us grow a specific plant, a specific way, during a specific time of the year. This keeps us from being limited to what we grow.
