I finally convinced my husband to fix our leaky bathtub faucet. The project is going to take longer than expected because he going to change the piping too. It will also fix the issue of when we turned on the shower, water would still come out of the bottom faucet so hopefully we will get better water pressure too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

Things that can reduce energy usage is utilizing natural light. When it is sunny outside in the winter open up the shades and the opposite in the summer months. Turn all water faucets to cold. This makes sure the water heater isn't heating up unnecessary water. Unplugging devices not in use, especially vampire devices.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?

    Jazz Benson 2/13/2019 10:31 AM
To continue increasing my water efficiency, I will turn down my how hot my hot water gets on the water heater to conserve energy. I will weekly/monthly go around the house to check the faucets and the piping underneath.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

When I don't have a reusable bag with me when I am checking out there are several things I may do. If I am only getting a few items I will carry them or put them in my purse. I might buy a reusable bag if the store sells them. If I do need to use a disposable bag, I will tell them to fill the bag as much as possible. I often notice cashiers will put two items in a bag instead of putting as much as possible.

Still so glad there the Eco-Challenge has expanded to more than the 2 week challenge in October. I think it is so amazing so many people at Viterbo have joined the group to make an impact!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

Composting puts more nutrients into the soil. I plan to use my composted soil on my yearly garden. It puts less volume of garbage in land fills too. I have a lot less garbage now. Sometimes I don't even have to put my garbage out because there is barely any there.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I practice self care by drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, not over stressing, exercising, and eating balanced meals!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

    Jazz Benson's avatar
    Jazz Benson 2/07/2019 11:47 AM
When I am at work and school, I always remind others to print double sided. It saves ink, paper, energy, and money. I think anyone can try to encourage others as well as the company they work for to change the settings on their printer. It only saves the business money!

I wish I would have known about Viterbo's campus Eco Challenge. I never knew there were more challenges than the October one. I'm glad they are changing it to be more of a lifestyle change than a temporary 2 week change.
