Eva's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 5 minutes using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 5 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Help Others
I will offer to help 1 person(s) who are in need each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 1 new neighbor(s) each day.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Food
Advocate for More Food Options
I will advocate for local and/or organic food options at work or on campus.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?
Eva Manzulli 4/15/2021 9:56 AMFood sovereignty is something that is rare nowadays because of how interconnected the world has become in regards to goods such as food. Living in Hawaii has shown me just how reliant we have become on others for our food, and if anything were to happen that would prevent us from being able to get those resources, we would be in a very bad situation -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate for More Food OptionsWhat changes would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods? How can your choices contribute to these changes?
Eva Manzulli 4/15/2021 9:53 AMI think change starts with everyone using their voices. It's important for communities to speak up when they are unsatisfied with the state of their community -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Eva Manzulli 4/14/2021 9:11 PMYou have to check what the number on your recycling is. Those numbers show you what you can and cannot recycle and this varries from state to state. In Hawaii, we take plastic #2 and #3. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Eva Manzulli 4/14/2021 9:09 PMI really appreciate that a lot of organizations such as banks, schools, etc have gone paperless. I wish Carthage didn't send out paper mail because we always receive them via email anyways. This is something we could definitely reach out to admin about! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Eva Manzulli 4/14/2021 9:07 PMMy biggest plastic waste is definitely little sandwich baggies. I use them all the time when I go down to the beach and need snacks or pack myself a lunch. Alternatives to plastic baggies could be wax paper or reusable Tupperware!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Eva Manzulli 4/14/2021 9:05 PMPeople are often susceptible to the energies around them. Environmental health creates good community health, and good community health creates good personal health! They all intersect :)-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Eva Manzulli 4/14/2021 9:04 PMI have an herb garden! We have a great planter outside where my family grows basil, parsley, kale, and I just planted some celery! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Eva Manzulli 4/14/2021 8:53 PMSince I live in Hawaii, I mostly worry about our oceans. I see how ocean pollution affects coastal cities and it's heartbreaking. Not to mention, if the ocean dies humans will too. We need to cut WAY back on plastic waste to protect our oceans and the fragile ecosystems within them-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Eva Manzulli 4/14/2021 8:52 PMSomething I got into last summer was modifying clothes I already had and was bored of to make them match my new style. This is a good way to reuse clothes you already have rather than buying new ones! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Eva Manzulli 4/14/2021 8:50 PMIt's hard to notice things when you don't see them. What I mean by this is that you don't ever see how much waste you've made in a week, month, or even year. You only see one garbage bag at a time. Reasons like this are why its so important to make a conscious effort to be aware of the waste you're producing
