What inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?

Personally I prefer renewable energy because it's less destructive to the ear. Energies that involve fossil fuels pollute the air and as a person with asthma I already have a difficult time breathing and I can't imagine living in a world where I can't breathe at all or worse can't even go outside because the air is so polluted.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Akeiaonda Marion-Pelmore's avatar

Plastic bottled waters are more convenient. A lot of people don't drink tap water, myself included. But I do think to encourage drinking tap water in reusable bottles over a bunch of plastic water bottles would be to have water filters installed so that the water is at least filtered. Also maybe adding ice or enhancements to the tap water such as fruit or those drink mixes. When we had a filter on our sink I regularly drank tap water. Maybe I could invest in another filter or the portable britta filter that filters bottles directly.

I am not a big fan of tap water either. My wife and I had a RO (Reverse Osmosis) system put in our home for a few hundred bucks and it will make up to 400 gallons a day. We also use reusable water bottles instead of buying bottled water now and this RO water is really good.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I don't personally think it's hard. However I don't have a very busy schedule and I can absolutely see how those with busier schedules can view it as a nuisance to clean a cup each night and refill it every morning. Creating the time to do this is probably the biggest challenge but maybe setting an alarm to remind you to do this daily can help to build up the habit.

I have to do the dishes at my house and my wife is a huge tea drinker. I used to use the same tea cup over a week or two but that has been brought to a quick halt. My wife insists that I clean her mug each night and have it clean by the tea maker in the morning. I guess it just become routine after awhile.

How might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?

    Akeiaonda Marion-Pelmore's avatar
    Akeiaonda Marion-Pelmore 11/24/2021 1:00 PM
When you're outside your mind seems to be less distracted. With less distractions you can focus better. This along with sunlight and fresh air I feel can enhance the brain's functioning.

All things are solved through walking outdoors. I can ease my mind, think of solutions to the world's problems and clean my lungs.

Totally agree. It is probably the amount of vitamin D that we get from the sun. I have noticed when Vitamin D levels drop in my body I get depressed.

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Akeiaonda Marion-Pelmore's avatar
    Akeiaonda Marion-Pelmore 11/22/2021 8:23 PM
Working out with friends is a good way to incorporate quality time with exercise. I can also go for a jog or workout outdoors as a way to incorporate nature.

Agreed. I personally play a lot of golf and pickleball outdoors during the nice weather. It's nice to get away from all the technology and just enjoy the fresh air outside.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Akeiaonda Marion-Pelmore's avatar
    Akeiaonda Marion-Pelmore 11/22/2021 8:20 PM
Ideally a person could carpool to these places. Sometimes my friends and I carpool to the grocery store or very often when we go out to eat lunch. I don't think carpooling to work/school is likely for me because A) you need to be comfortable with these people and B) your schedules need to match up. However for other places like going out to eat, going to get coffee, or going shopping I could absolutely carpool with those that I'm going with.

I agree with you here. I live in Morton and carpooling to school isn't really an option for me for the same reasons you stated. We would have to have the same schedule for one and you are right, I would not want to ride with somebody I didn't know too well. I like to drive anyways.

I have come to the conclusion that it really isn't that hard to refill a bottle every night for the day. I've also realized that by doing this my water intake has increased dramatically, which is really good because I'm normally very dehydrated.
