Daniel's actions
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 3 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 45 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Daniel Maris 7/17/2020 1:05 AMI have been recycling through my business often and now doing so in my personal life. It's difficult to separate out recycles as much as somewhere like Japan who has systems of various recycle numbered/colored bins literally everywhere. I feel all recycles from a home perspective get placed in one bin and shipped off to the recycle center. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Daniel Maris 7/17/2020 1:04 AMLess meat is less methane in the air being spent and less unhealthy foods consumed. Meats can be hard on the body to digest as well as being unhealthy compared to fruits and vegetables nutrition wise and should be considered more in moderation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Daniel Maris 6/11/2020 12:08 PMThe next step is to turn off the water every single time I brush my teeth as sometimes I don't think twice to do so, but can save quite a lot of water if it was consistent! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Daniel Maris 6/11/2020 12:08 PMIm not surprised, unfortunately that's a sad realization that are not using our food in smarter ways such as more donations and feeding the less fortunate. We should also be practicing smaller consumption sizes that lead to less waste of animal products -
Daniel Maris 5/19/2020 1:45 PMAnother day of no thermostat, no driving and a PC that has stayed off! -
Daniel Maris 5/13/2020 2:02 PMLeaving the thermostat off even in the cool night or hot day -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Drive LessHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Daniel Maris 5/12/2020 5:09 PMI have been driving less due to COVID-19, but also because I choose to walk around Downtown if I need something immediate. I am lucky to have public transportation very close to me and it works amazing if destinations make sense. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Daniel Maris 5/12/2020 5:05 PMI make sure to only use appliances and A/C when I need to, if I am not home I will make sure I shut everything off each week. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Daniel Maris 5/12/2020 5:05 PMI turn off the TV and other appliances, including my computer and laptop and disconnect the charger while not using it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Daniel Maris 5/12/2020 5:04 PMI can make sure to turn off any unused appliances and lights while away from home and before going to bed. Throughout the day, make sure whatever I am not using does not get left on
