Ryan Martin
"I was born and raised in Santa Barbara CA and have now lived on Oahu for the last 3.5 years. Surfing and snowboarding are my two favorite activities when I'm not working or in school. I've worked on an organic farm for the last six years selling produce at farmers markets to pruning plants in the greenhouse. I'm majoring in Environmental Studies and usually can be found on the North Shore. Traveling is also a big passion and I am always excited to see new places and cultures. With the eco challenge I want to make a difference and see how much of an impact I really have. I think this is a great way to get involved on an individual level and allows self reflection on better alternatives or shifts in your daily life style. "

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Visit A Local FarmHow do our current food growing and manufacturing processes affect our future and the future of Earth?
Ryan Martin 11/08/2020 1:42 PMWith an exponentially growing population food security is becoming more and more of a concern. With farms expanding to meet the needs of society many farmers are tending to switch to more conventional practices. While this sounds like a good plan, it's leading to an excess of water runoff, health issues, and many other negative externalities. When farming conventionally there are many short cuts that make the process cheaper and doesn't really require pre learned skills. Eating a large amount of plants covered in these pesticides can be damaging to an animal’s or humans health. As a community we need to promote the importance of implementing organic methods that encourage healthy soils, marine health, water conservation, disease prevention, and an overall better option for the future.
