Landers's actions
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 5 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 6 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 20 minute(s)

Landers Mayer 10/14/2018 3:30 PMTrying not to use plastic straws has made me so aware of how many restaurants give drinks with straws automatically in them - this is definitely a question that should be implemented in all restaurants instead of it being a basic assumption. -
Landers Mayer 10/14/2018 3:28 PMSecond to last day of the EcoChallenge! Bummed it'll be ending soon but am excited for what I've learned to continue to positively affect my life. -
Landers Mayer 10/04/2018 7:24 PMSpent a lot of my time driving today. It was pouring the entire time, which put me in a pretty negative mood. Writing down three things I'm happy and grateful for help put things back into perspective for me, though!-
Ava Warfel 10/05/2018 11:11 AMThat's so neat that you were able to find some beauty in a crappy situation!!!

Landers Mayer 10/04/2018 7:23 PMWent out to eat at a restaurant for the first time since starting the challenge - made sure to ask for no straws! Felt pretty good about it. -
Landers Mayer 10/02/2018 5:38 AMIt's been a really stressful start of the week. Taking five minutes out of my day to meditate is a nice little break from everything. It helps to ensure I'm a little more focused for when I go back to work. Similarly, trying to reduce my social media usage has also allowed me to focus more and get more work done, which is interesting!! Thinking about making these challenges a more permanent part of my life. -
Landers Mayer 10/01/2018 6:39 AMStarted the day off by getting an adequate amount of sleep. Did not check social media for the first thirty minutes while getting ready today for classes which caused me to be quicker.... which allowed me to have time to meditate this morning! Good first day for the EcoChallenge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Landers Mayer 9/28/2018 7:36 PMI would like to shift my sleeping patterns so that I fall asleep at a more consistent time every night instead of it varying sometimes by hours. What helps me be more successful in this is planning out my day so that I have at least an hour before my planned bed time so I can power down and relax, catch up on news, etc. before falling asleep. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Landers Mayer 9/28/2018 7:30 PMI have noticed that I feel more present with current actions and with my surroundings. I put in more effort with my friends and those I surround myself with when I am with them because I am not constantly checking my phone. I feel lighter. I have also deleted some social media apps off my phone to further my involvement in this challenge and this has made me less worrisome about receiving notifications. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Landers Mayer 9/28/2018 7:29 PMBy making this a new habit, I think I need to find myself a water bottle that will be aesthetically pleasing to look at (because it'll make me want to drink out of it) but also one that is practical for everyday use. I can set myself up to make this a permanent change by refusing to buy plastic water bottles and only relying on my reusable bottle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Businesses Owned by People of ColorA recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?
Landers Mayer 9/28/2018 7:27 PMI can address systemic racism by ensuring that businesses owned by minorities receive the same amount of support that similar businesses owned by another race. In my daily life, I also try and acknowledge disparities between races that influence wealth and income. I can also protest businesses and people who have clearly shown they do not want equality between races.
