Patricia's actions
Health
Joyful Movement
I will spend 15 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Simplicity
Work-Life Balance
I will not work more than 8 hour days each day to practice work-life balance.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 30-minute walk outside each day.
Health
Reduce refined sugar
I will keep track and reduce my consumption of refined sugars, including sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 20 minute(s) each day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Resilient Powergrids
A community can be brought to its knees without dependable power, often affecting the most vulnerable. I will write 1 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for a more resilient power grid (e.g. microgrids, solar+storage).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Patricia McDougall 3/12/2021 8:16 AMIt's fun to see the competitive spirit coming out and the encouraging and reflective statements people have made. My only wish is that we make only positive statements here; this should not be a place to spark rumors or to "tattle" on others. The purpose of this challenge is to be reflective of how our actions contribute to helping to heal the earth and educate ourselves. Let's act with integrity all the way around, please.-

Patricia McDougall 3/05/2021 9:15 AMIts is fun to see what the teams are doing. So far in the rankings, it is all of lower and preschool, then Guillaume's 6th grade advisory, and then Emily's 7th grade advisory, of which I am lucky to be a part. -
Patricia McDougall 3/05/2021 9:10 AMThis was a very pleasant surprise I found along 14th street in Manhattan yesterday as I was walking to the subway after an early morning doctor visit. I love the small joys one can experience by being open to the world around you while walking. I would not have seen this if I had been on my phone.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Patricia McDougall 3/05/2021 8:16 AMI am getting a lot of cardio in by dancing ridiculously in my apartment at night. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Patricia McDougall 3/05/2021 8:15 AMSadly getting the extra sleep has come from sleeping through my alarm, haha! I need to abide by an alarm in the evenings to power down electronics and get ready for bed.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Reduce refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Patricia McDougall 3/05/2021 8:13 AMI have been very aware of my sugar intake for a couple of years now, At first, it surprised. me to find sugar in so many unexpected places, such as salad dressings and ketchup. But am I celebrating earning my Masters degree with a cake this weekend? Yes. Yes, I am.-

Patricia McDougall 3/05/2021 8:10 AMI turn off my surge protectors when I am not using them. I am getting better and keeping things unplugged overnight. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Work-Life BalanceHow might practicing work-life balance lead to a more sustainable life for yourself? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Patricia McDougall 3/02/2021 7:46 AMI appreciate being able to "leave work" when I shut down my work computer. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner; I have burnt out in the past. I am hoping that by managing my time more purposefully, I can avoid burn out in the future. -
Patricia McDougall 3/02/2021 7:43 AMI like the idea of being more aware of the world around me and my place in it. It's nice to feel connected to a larger group.
