Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 120 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Bailey McGowan 4/25/2021 11:21 AMFor a lot of people (myself included), the absence of the existence of technology will probably enhance brainpower by proxy. Aside from that, the quiet and undistracted landscape can bring a bit of clarity at the very least. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Bailey McGowan 4/25/2021 11:18 AMI believe the difficulty of understanding our own impact is from the perception of it, seeing a small amount of trash as an acceptable necessity instead of a contribution to multiple issues. This audit makes you consider buying products that unnecessarily contained or wrapped, like individually wrapped tea bags or disposable water bottles, when there are easy alternatives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Bailey McGowan 3/28/2021 8:52 PMWhile the idea of brazenly spending some cash is alluring, I'll probably just be boring and save it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Learn About Renewable EnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Bailey McGowan 3/28/2021 9:46 AMThe inspiration comes from the negative repercussions of the current energy standard spawning from both the harvesting and usage of oil/gas. One of the focal points of these documentaries I've watched is the comparison of the waste created by fossil fuels and cleaner energy alternatives (obviously, the byproduct of fossil fuels is much worse).

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsSwitching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Bailey McGowan 3/28/2021 9:34 AMI already had a couple of LED bulbs lying around, I just never got around to installing them. I've been using an LED lamp for a good bit of time, as well, both last longer, so there is no reason for me not to use them.
