Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Help Others
I will offer to help 1 person(s) who are in need each day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Action Track: Building Resilience

Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
Kathryn Moutvic 4/15/2021 9:54 AMThe challenge is going great! I have been learning a lot while reducing my footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Kathryn Moutvic 3/31/2021 6:51 AMBy practicing gratitude, you encourage others to do the same. This leads to a better world because everyone is working to achieve the same, and that improves the world we live in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Practice Loving-Kindness MeditationHow can practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation be helpful to the health of the environment?
Kathryn Moutvic 3/31/2021 6:48 AMI think that by caring for yourself, it also encourages you to care for the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Kathryn Moutvic 3/31/2021 6:47 AMI do not get much sleep now, so I would like to shift my sleep pattern to get more sleep. What works for me is putting my phone away before I go to bed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Kathryn Moutvic 3/30/2021 6:42 AMI think it is difficult to understand the impacts fo our purchases and waste because we don't actually see where is ends up. We put our waste in the trash and it conveniently goes away and we never see it again. By seeing how much trash I create, I will do a better job of using less to reduce that amount. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Kathryn Moutvic 3/29/2021 9:13 AMI would accept a plastic one, but then save and reuse the bag when I need it. I can try to avoid this situation by keeping reusable bags in my car so I don't forget them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Kathryn Moutvic 3/29/2021 9:12 AMMy core values are honesty, kindness, and determination. These are my core values because they are very important for myself and my relationships with others. -
