Susan's actions
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 20 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Health
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Food
Whole Food Lifestyle
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 20 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Water
Collect Rain Water
I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.

Susan Namboodiri 4/26/2021 3:47 PMI created a presentation based on hours of research on environmental stewardship of Sugar Creek. The upshot is that environmental stewardship requires both continuity across multiple generations and immediate intergenerational cooperation now to achieve sustainability. Psychological distance and uncertainty about climate change lend to a tragedy of the commons effect. Becoming invested in local environmental stewardship helps to close that psychological gap. Biophilia is a love of place. Who doesn't love and appreciate the beauty of natural resources such as Sugar Creek in BloNo?!-
Janet Beach Davis 4/27/2021 6:11 PMAre you working on the Savannah restoration project?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?
Susan Namboodiri 4/26/2021 3:39 PMLocalized food systems benefit from wisdom of those who have farmed the land in that particular ecosystem. People should have a say in the way food is grown and distributed. Corporate giants like Monsanto seek to own the very seeds used to grow crops. Because accessibility to quality foods grown in a healthy, sustainable manner will make or break the health of the local people, they should be sovereign over their food sources.-
Janet Beach Davis 4/27/2021 6:13 PMAnd eventually the memory of how to grow disappears, which makes the whole society dependent on the system for food instead of themselves.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Susan Namboodiri 4/17/2021 7:41 PMThe elderly and children, as well as those experiencing poverty, are impacted most by environmental justice issues. Access to nutritious foods, renewable energy options, and healthcare exacerbate adverse effects of pollution, climate change, and global warming.
