Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

There are no barriers to using my reusable water bottle. It is already permanent with the exception I am at an event where carry-ins aren't allowed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Power Down the Computer
What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

Another thing I could do would be to simply keep the lights off when not in the room or just to utilize the sunlight during the day time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Owen Paulson 10/07/2019 3:24 PM
Energy is generated primarily from a nuclear plant that sends the energy to La Cross, and also from a local waste incineration plant. The environmental effects are almost unseen from the nuclear plant and the incineration plant has low emissions, but it does require a decent amount of lumber. The lumber used is primarily railroad ties being recycled as a burnable substance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Heat and Cool Naturally
What are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?

    Owen Paulson 10/07/2019 3:18 PM
The usage of solar energy is an option, however it is not something feasible to me at the moment because I can't just go and install some panels on top of Wentz Hall.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

The next step after five minute showers could be efficient shower heads, but there are already HE heads in the shower.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Owen Paulson's avatar
    Owen Paulson 10/02/2019 3:13 PM
I have not used a straw or a lid on any drinks this past week. So, I didn't incorporate any of the main R's but used "refuse"
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Owen Paulson's avatar
    Owen Paulson 10/02/2019 3:11 PM
I have went out and found out how to compost and what materials I'd need in order to compost. Have not composted yet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
