REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:26 PMpracticing simplicity challenges us to use items in multipurpose ways. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Organize a CourseHow can you use Ecochallenge.org programs to help mobilize your community to take action toward a sustainable future?
Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:26 PMi think it starts small by talking about such things with our friends and family. Our decisions on how we live and consume are not made in a vacuum. We are affected by the consumer culture and society around us. just making it the norm to openly discuss fosters a way forward for us all. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go For A Daily Walk OutsideFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:24 PMit brings me to the present and in real life, connecting mind and body, rather than being online -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Track my PurchasesWhat have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?
Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:21 PMi spend more than i thought i did, and on frivoulous things. i am planning on doing a low-buy for 12 months -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:20 PMit motivated me to spend more time outside. it took me from the online world to the real world outside. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Public TransitThe US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and just 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?
Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:19 PMno, there is not a "civilian" option for defense while there are for education and transportation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:18 PMi think there has been an increase in recent years to not use paper wastefully, so it has helped that professors dont require hardcopy papers, or at least accept double sided. i can petition for this in classes which have a different standard, and be an example to other students by voicing my concerns. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:16 PMit is difficult because we dont see upfront all of that has gone into a product, and we are not a culture that thinks about things beyond our trash can. this challenge has forced me to think about the complete cycle of product's lifetime. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:14 PMi found that hawaii's site for curbsite pick up and recycling was amazingly easy to navigate, and provided a lot of information. local resources, ways to reduce use in the first place, time tables, local facilities, contact information was all provided, plus much more. there is an emphasis on really thinking through the waste management.
