i think it starts small by talking about such things with our friends and family. Our decisions on how we live and consume are not made in a vacuum. We are affected by the consumer culture and society around us. just making it the norm to openly discuss fosters a way forward for us all.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Simplicity Go For A Daily Walk Outside
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

    Aisling Redmond's avatar
    Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:24 PM
it brings me to the present and in real life, connecting mind and body, rather than being online

personal relationships and making quality time
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Use Public Transit
The US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and just 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?

    Aisling Redmond's avatar
    Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:19 PM
no, there is not a "civilian" option for defense while there are for education and transportation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

    Aisling Redmond's avatar
    Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:18 PM
i think there has been an increase in recent years to not use paper wastefully, so it has helped that professors dont require hardcopy papers, or at least accept double sided. i can petition for this in classes which have a different standard, and be an example to other students by voicing my concerns.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

    Aisling Redmond's avatar
    Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:16 PM
it is difficult because we dont see upfront all of that has gone into a product, and we are not a culture that thinks about things beyond our trash can. this challenge has forced me to think about the complete cycle of product's lifetime.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Aisling Redmond's avatar
    Aisling Redmond 11/25/2018 4:14 PM
i found that hawaii's site for curbsite pick up and recycling was amazingly easy to navigate, and provided a lot of information. local resources, ways to reduce use in the first place, time tables, local facilities, contact information was all provided, plus much more. there is an emphasis on really thinking through the waste management.
