When I was young, my family camped in a tent and went to places like the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota. I loved the clear lakes and tall pine trees. I also once went on a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.  For this goal area, I made a homemade spray from a recipe with natural ingredients including chopped up serrano peppers and vinegar. I sprayed this on my tulips as a deterrent to squirrels who "eat" my tulips which are blooming now.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Recently, I have eliminated buying toothpaste in tubes. Instead, I bought tooth cleaning tablets in a re-fillable glass jar. These tablets work fine and now I have no empty tubes to recycle. I also used up my last plastic deodorant roll-on and started using a deodorant cream--again in a refillable glass jar. I bought these products at the Tare Market.

To what extent do environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?

I am pretty healthy and haven't experienced much personal reaction to cleaning products. I am concerned about the impact of cleaners  released into the environment. I plan to avoid products I used in the past like Magic Erasers and oven cleaners.

Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

I don't eat fish or seafood very often, but I have occasionally bought fresh salmon at my co-op. I have down-loaded a guide from saewatch.org to rate how sustainabiy produced fish are. I have sent an e-mail to my co-op to get details about the salmon they sell and will not buy salmon until I know it is sustainably produced.

I have been researching about sustainable fishing practices and downloaded a guide from seawatch .org. I sent an e-mail to my co-cop to get more information about  how sustainable is the salmon they sell. I will avoid purchasing salmon in the future if I can't determine that is is a variety that is sustainably fished or farmed.

    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

Whenever I go to my drug store, I always decline the plastic bag and most recently did this twice last week. I just carried the items out in my hands. I also use reusable bags at my co-op which is allowed.

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

Because I am retired and because of the pandemic, I have not bought many  clothes in the past year. I read the info on more sustainable fashion and I want to follow those guidelines. I can mend and repair clothes as needed to keep using them. I have recycled old clothes in the past to thrift stores. I also can purchase clothes at thrift shops as well. I want to investigate more sustainably made fabrics like hemp, bamboo, silk, etc. In the past year I did purchase a dress for dance that is made of Tencel (lyocell) and I was happy to read that this is a more sustainably made fabric.
