  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Switch to Cold Water
What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

    Eric Ritter's avatar
    Eric Ritter 11/08/2021 7:05 AM
I'm not exactly sure what I plan to do with the money that is saved from making more energy efficient choices. However, it does feel great to be able to save money while making choices that have a positive effect on our environment and world.

So far the Campus Ecochallenge has been a great experience. It has really challenged me to reevaluate my everyday practices and has helped to create changes within me that I will carry throughout my life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

    Eric Ritter's avatar
    Eric Ritter 11/03/2021 9:42 AM
It's interesting but encouraging others to make the switch to two-sided printing may be as easy as asking the question. "Why are you not printing on both sides?". To often we find ourselves just following what has always been done or what might seem easy. Sometimes, things don't change because we get to a point where we can't see change. Much of the time it just takes a little nudge to change the point of view.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

    Eric Ritter's avatar
    Eric Ritter 11/03/2021 9:32 AM
If faced with a situation where a reusable bag is not available. I feel completely comfortable carrying what I have in my hands or taking my items out in a cart, loading them and then using my reusable bag when taking the items into my home.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Eric Ritter's avatar
    Eric Ritter 11/02/2021 10:25 AM
There are many different outlets for a wide variety of recyclables throughout our community. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a local recycling outlet for styrofoam. I feel the biggest deterrent of recycling is the accessibility and education in regards to recycling.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

    Eric Ritter's avatar
    Eric Ritter 11/02/2021 9:57 AM
I think it is  difficult to understand the impacts of our purchases and waste because, for the most part we do not see and feel the impacts first hand. Further, excessive purchases and waste is something that our society has accepted or even perpetuates. This challenge has made me more aware of how much of an impact one individual can make.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Simplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?

    Eric Ritter's avatar
    Eric Ritter 11/01/2021 9:21 AM
I feel the biggest thing is to have a shift in mindset, accepting that possessions do not define us and are not a substitute for true happiness. We must choose to only purchase things that have a purpose.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Eric Ritter's avatar
    Eric Ritter 11/01/2021 8:35 AM
The neighborhoods/areas that are most effected by our waste site locations are of lower income.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Tour A Waste Management Facility
Field trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you tour? What did you learn?

    Eric Ritter's avatar
    Eric Ritter 11/01/2021 7:23 AM
I toured the Midwest Fiber Recycling facility. I feel the biggest thing I learned was the importance of not providing contaminated recycle to the Recycling facility,
