Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

I knew plastic film wasn't something you could recycle in a normal curbside bin, but it turned out there was a lot of places like fredmeyer you could bring it to for recycling.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Core Values
What are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?

Happiness, improvement, understanding, equality, and kindness. I decided on these by thinking about what I care most about, and I know I want to enjoy every day I have, I enjoy and appreciate improvement and learning in myself and the world around me, and that the world I want to live in is fair, equal, unbiased, and kind.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

oregon.gov says in 2019 most electricity was produced from natural gas (38.4%) but that overall most over time has been from hydroelectricity (37.23%).
Natural gas contributes to greenhouse gas emissions but is less impactful than coal, and hydroelectricity is renewable energy but still has environmental impacts from changing habitat and impacting species by doing so (ex. impeding salmon reproduction by getting in the way of their return trip).
I'm pleased to see that most electricity is from less impactful sources than coal even if it's 2nd at 23.4% in 2019. Even with the impacts those non-coal energy sources have I'd guess it's better for the environment in the long term.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Learn About Renewable Energy
What inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?

My love of nature and the interest in learning about sustainability in general that came in part from it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

I think making use of natural lighting more would help reduce my electricity usage.

Because I've been focusing on trying to catch up on assignments in my classes overall I haven't put the time in to do many of my tasks because they are primarily one-time research tasks for a period of time, but I plan on completing them before the ecochallenge finishes at the very least. Many of the daily tasks I have been doing are things I do a lot of the time anyways, but I'm especially making sure to do them now, so that's what matters I guess.

So far I've just done daily tasks that don't require much effort, and I'd like to do some research tasks tomorrow.
