Megan's actions
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Simplicity
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 40 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 2 conversations.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
LEARN ABOUT TRANS, FEMME, AND NONBINARY EXPERIENCES
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 20 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Community
Help Others
I will offer to help 2 person(s) who are in need each day.
Community
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 2 new neighbor(s) each day.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 20 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 3 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Host A Watch Party
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.
Waste
Carry my Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Host A Watch PartyWhat did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?
Megan Ruhland 11/29/2020 11:30 PMI learned that the orcas at Seaworld are mistreated and should not be kept in those tanks. It made me very angry and upset that someone could do that to those animals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve a Bus StopIn what ways can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Megan Ruhland 11/29/2020 8:16 PMAs people we need to have ways to get from point A to point B. Most of the time we use a car, but by using public transport it saves the environment. By making bus stops and buses more friendly we can help make them more welcoming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Megan Ruhland 11/29/2020 8:14 PMFixing my trip was not fun. I am now flying into a city further from my town and it will take longer to get there, but if it helps the environment I am okay with that. I can avoid more air travel by not travelling and when I do travel I travel by car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Megan Ruhland 11/29/2020 8:12 PMBecause without pollinators then we would have no way of pollinating our plants and then everything will die. The bee movie is a good example of why we need to take care of our pollinators. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Megan Ruhland 11/29/2020 1:50 AMThese are my top 4 core values. I chose them after I aligned my personal values and beliefs then asked people who know me well what they thought my values were. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Megan Ruhland 11/29/2020 1:25 AMThe local people of Hawai'i and the minorities are most affected. Tourists leave trash and create an extreme amount of pollutants in this area. I walked around Chinatown while researching and the amount of trash buildup was ridiculous. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?
Megan Ruhland 11/29/2020 1:22 AMFood sovereignty is the right of all people, no matter their income, to be able to get healthy and sustainable food. As food production transferred from local to global, it became less sustainable. Food sovereignty is about the food and less about the money made off of the food. In modern global food systems, food is not produced with the consumers health in mind, but their wallet instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Fix Leaky FaucetsFixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Learn About Renewable EnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Megan Ruhland 11/28/2020 5:22 PMThe Earth has been housing us for millions of years and to repay it we are destroying it. If we do not all individually act on these issues then the world will not get better; only worse. -
Megan Ruhland 11/25/2020 9:46 PMI forgot my trash bag inside Pier 9 and had to go back and get it.
