Tori's actions
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Carry my Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Tori Russell 3/29/2022 6:25 PMI've started showering with the lights off, as weird as that sounds. It's actually extremely relaxing. If it's dark outside, I'll set up the back flashlight on my phone and shine it upwards. It's much more fun than using the lights! I've been taking shorter showers too to limit water use! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Tori Russell 3/29/2022 6:23 PMMy dad and I have a few fish tanks at home. Normally we keep the lights on all the time in the fish tanks, but lately we've been turning them off a lot more. Not only does it help to decrease the amount of algae, but it's less electricity being used! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Tori Russell 3/23/2022 5:02 PMNormally I go into places empty-handed with my method of payment in my pocket. Since I'm usually shopping for just myself, I can completely fill my arms and have no need for a bag. It's great. If I need to get more than what I can carry, I either bring a friend, or grab a reusable bag from home or bring everything out in a cart. I keep a basket in the back of my car to put my groceries and stuff in for the ride home. It's really good for bringing stuff back and forth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Drive LessHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Tori Russell 3/23/2022 4:59 PMI live in Henrietta, and normally I'll go home for a bit to do work in between my classes. Recently I've been staying on campus a lot more to save some trips. It's been a lot less stressful trying to get places on time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Carry my TrashWhat one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?
Tori Russell 3/14/2022 8:26 PMI eat outside whenever possible with my friends. Since the weather has warmed up enough to spend a bit of time outside, I've been trying my best to get out. Today my friends and I had a meal at a park near campus, but there were no outdoor trash cans. We took everything back to my car and I opted to just throw it out at my house. The trip was great! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Tori Russell 3/14/2022 8:23 PMI try not to use much paper, but I have to print lab photos for one of my classes. It's much easier for me to print double-sided, and it helps with cleaning up my lab notebook a bit. Rather than take up more space with two photos, I can tape the top of one in and have it loose to flip upwards!
