Work from Home
I will work from home 1 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Candace Satterfield 11/23/2020 5:14 PMI have learned to love thrift shops way more than any retailers/fast fashion industries. If anything, this allows me to express myself creatively even more, since all of my items are so unique and cannot be found in copies on the shelves. Thrift shopping is like treasure hunting, when you find an item you are in love with you know that it is unique to itself and cannot be found just anywhere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Candace Satterfield 11/23/2020 5:12 PMI love doing yoga with my friends. It is very empowering and motivating. This allows me to spend quality time with the people I enjoy, while also getting a nice stretch and workout in! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Candace Satterfield 11/23/2020 5:09 PMPetroleum-fired power plants supply about three-fourths of Hawaii's electricity generation. Coal generation provides 15 percent and renewable sources (wind, geothermal, biomass, and hydroelectricity) supply the remainder of the state's electricity generation. This use of energy is not beneficial to the environment, besides the use of renewable resources. The fact that Hawaii uses renewable resources at least a little bit should be an example of how we can achieve this on a larger scale, and encourage the state of Hawaii to do so! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Candace Satterfield 11/10/2020 8:18 PMSometimes straws, but I just recently invested in some reusable straws and now I barely use any single-use items. It feels good to know that I am helping our planet, and now I never have to worry about having a straw/utensils because I carry them with me mostly everywhere! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Food LifestyleMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
Candace Satterfield 11/10/2020 8:17 PMI think this is a very wise statement because in the west especially, we rely on doctors and pharmaceuticals to fix our health. We fail to recognize good health begins with what we are putting into our body. If we are eating mcdonalds everyday, of course our health will be greatly jeopardized. I think this is why Micheal made this statement because farmers are the main contributors to our access to whole foods, which is the healthiest option. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Candace Satterfield 11/10/2020 8:14 PMI do not think this is a big hesitation for me, but because we are in a pandemic this is sometimes difficult for sanitary reasons. A lot of coffee shops arent accepting reusable mugs right now, but it dosent hurt to ask. I guess the first steps are asking my local coffee shops to see if this is an option, and then of course bringing my mug. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Candace Satterfield 11/10/2020 8:12 PMFor me, I feel much more energized and in a better mood when I eat mostly fruits and veggies. For other people, it would probably have the same effect. For the planet, this is an excellent alternative because fruit and veggies use much less water and energy to produce! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Candace Satterfield 11/10/2020 8:08 PMThere is typically no barriers for me using the alternative of reusable water bottles, but when there is, it is because i do not have access to a reusable bottle or water. I can resolve this by becoming more aware of bringing water with me on the go, or at least a reusable bottle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsMany people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?
Candace Satterfield 11/04/2020 5:28 PMThis is a myth because opposing agricultural practices are destructive to our planet in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and soil erosion. If anything, organic farming is counterproductive because it does not produce as many emissions and requires less energy. There needs to be more land available for farming and less farmers in order to achieve this properly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Candace Satterfield 11/02/2020 8:33 PMI think many people would argue this is because meat is viewed as a luxury, but I also feel that this is culturally engrained in more privileged societies from the start. As someone who used to eat meat nearly every day, I was not aware of my impact on the environment. Eating more meat effects our planet tremendously, it depletes our world of it's natural resources, which will effect poorer regions of the world first.
