Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Drinking water is a good thing because it is healthy and makes your body refreshed

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Xavier Smalls's avatar

I use some plastic bags and coffee cups, but instead I can use paper bags and a reusable water bottle

    Health Take Control
How do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?

    Xavier Smalls's avatar
    Xavier Smalls 7/16/2020 6:00 PM
All of these types of health intersect with each other because they are all health and they all are similar. Environmental Health deals with air, sun, and biodiversity, community health deals with the health of the people, and my personal health deals with my own body and my own choices. They all trace back to one thing: HEALTH!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Support Pollution Reduction
What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

    Xavier Smalls's avatar
    Xavier Smalls 7/16/2020 5:58 PM
The environmental factors that affect human health in my region are animals not having a home and weeds growing everywhere. They affect people daily and they affect us by making life harder
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
