Xavier's actions
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 5 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Nature
Learning about God's Creation
To learn more about God's creation and to thank him for it
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Health
Mile Tracker
Walk over 3 miles each day.
Nature
Zoo
Going to the zoo in order to learn more about animals and their habitats.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Health
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 35 minute(s)
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 10 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Community
Help Others
I will offer to help 3 person(s) who are in need each day.
Water
Water Consumption
I will try to drink mostly water each day and drink a good amount of it!
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Xavier Smalls 7/16/2020 6:01 PMI use some plastic bags and coffee cups, but instead I can use paper bags and a reusable water bottle -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Xavier Smalls 7/16/2020 6:00 PMAll of these types of health intersect with each other because they are all health and they all are similar. Environmental Health deals with air, sun, and biodiversity, community health deals with the health of the people, and my personal health deals with my own body and my own choices. They all trace back to one thing: HEALTH! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Xavier Smalls 7/16/2020 5:58 PMThe environmental factors that affect human health in my region are animals not having a home and weeds growing everywhere. They affect people daily and they affect us by making life harder -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Xavier Smalls 7/16/2020 11:40 AMUsing a reusable coffee mug makes me feel like I am saving the lives of animals and decreasing litter -
Xavier Smalls 7/15/2020 3:26 PMUsing less straws will help decrease pollution and will increase the safety of animals and plants! -
Xavier Smalls 7/15/2020 3:22 PMI saw many very interesting animals at the zoo today! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
