Ja'Ziya's actions
Health
Reduce refined sugar
I will keep track and reduce my consumption of refined sugars, including sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 1 new neighbor(s) each day.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Help Others
I will offer to help 3 person(s) who are in need each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 45-minute walk outside each day.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 5 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day this week.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Ja'Ziya Sweeney 3/18/2022 8:33 AMI have recently purchased reusable, rubber straws and a case for them. They are much better than plastic straws and it's super easy to carry them around. The case is about the size of my air pods case which I never have an issue carrying around. In worse case scenario, besides restaurant cups. I will just drink from the cup, when going to restaurants I try my best to bring my own. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Ja'Ziya Sweeney 3/18/2022 8:30 AMOver the past 2 years I have chosen to eat less meat. I have considered the amount of animals have to suffer and are killed for human benefit. However, I have not officially cut out meat and I do eat meat at least once a week. I just decreased eating meat every single day.
I feel as though richer countries eat more meat because the accessibility of meat is easy. There is an advantage on supply and transporting meat throughout the countries. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Ja'Ziya Sweeney 3/18/2022 8:25 AMAs the weather is getting nicer outside, it feels relaxing and refreshing to just walk outside. The weather has been fairly nice and it's starting to become more comfortable to take more walks without freezing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Reduce refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Ja'Ziya Sweeney 3/18/2022 8:18 AMNo I did not think I was addicted to sugar. I do not eat or drink sweet things that often due to personal preference. So really paying attention to cut down even more caused me to feel better about myself more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Ja'Ziya Sweeney 3/01/2022 8:43 AMWe often spend so much time wanting things we do not need. Things others have that seem cool, something you would "like" to have... Just because you want it doesn't mean you need it. This goes along with clutter made in living spaces, things you do not need take up unnecessary space. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm RoomHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?
Ja'Ziya Sweeney 3/01/2022 8:41 AMYesterday, I got new shelves to organize more things instead of having so many things in one space. Today, I rearranged my room so I could place my dresser, shelves, couch and things in better places.
