Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

When I selected which challenges I wanted to take on, I choose an easier challenge and the rest were harder for me. The easier challenge I thought would be using a reusable shopping bag. I try not to make too many trips to the store because going every time I need something would be a waste of time and gas. So when I do go, I make it worth it. Usually, it's for groceries and so I bought a reusable bag and I've come to enjoy shopping with it. But last week I needed a new dress for a wedding I was invited to. I went shopping, found a dress, and it wasn't until I got home that I realized that I failed at my eco challenge because they automatically gave me a plastic bag for the new dress. It didn't dawn on me to bring in my reusable bag for this kind of shopping run or at least ask for the item without the bag. Makes you realize how automatic it is to freely give out one-time use items without thinking about it.

So far my challenges are going well. I like to have smoothies in the mornings on the weekdays and so I have started using a reusable shake cup and then I don't need to use a straw or the plastic cups the smoothie shop on campus gives you. It's nice not throwing away a cup and straw every day. I'm working on getting all my paper bills as ebills now and I still want to watch a documentary about food sovereignty.
