Melody's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

Melody Thiel 5/02/2019 8:15 AMWhen I selected which challenges I wanted to take on, I choose an easier challenge and the rest were harder for me. The easier challenge I thought would be using a reusable shopping bag. I try not to make too many trips to the store because going every time I need something would be a waste of time and gas. So when I do go, I make it worth it. Usually, it's for groceries and so I bought a reusable bag and I've come to enjoy shopping with it. But last week I needed a new dress for a wedding I was invited to. I went shopping, found a dress, and it wasn't until I got home that I realized that I failed at my eco challenge because they automatically gave me a plastic bag for the new dress. It didn't dawn on me to bring in my reusable bag for this kind of shopping run or at least ask for the item without the bag. Makes you realize how automatic it is to freely give out one-time use items without thinking about it. -
Melody Thiel 4/23/2019 8:13 AMSo far my challenges are going well. I like to have smoothies in the mornings on the weekdays and so I have started using a reusable shake cup and then I don't need to use a straw or the plastic cups the smoothie shop on campus gives you. It's nice not throwing away a cup and straw every day. I'm working on getting all my paper bills as ebills now and I still want to watch a documentary about food sovereignty.
